    Found peahen

A peahen found her way into our yard and has taken up residence with our chickens. I was wondering what range they have so that I can distribute signs appropriately to hopefully get her home. Thanks.

    Welsummer?

Got 2 beautiful little white eggs today. The flock is almost at full production. Yippee! I'm calling them brown leghorns...thanks!

    Welsummer?

Learn something new every day! I did not know the earlobes indicated the egg color.

    Welsummer?

Thank you for pointing me to leghorn. After reading more about that breed, the description of nervous temperament fits them. Both the Barred Rocks and Australorps are fairly friendly, but not my brown hens. I guess I'll find out as soon as they start laying. White eggs would confirm.

    Welsummer?

I got a "grab bag" of chicks and ended up with 4 Australorps, 2 Barred Rock and 2 of these unknowns. Only the Australorps are laying, so I don’t know what color eggs these girls lay. I thought the coloring looked like Welsummer, but maybe some kind of RIR?

    Welsummer?

I know the breeds of all my hens except two. They are not laying yet, but my best guess is Welsummer. What do you think?

    Wing Clipping

I do because my chickens free range in our yard which has only a 4' fence. We live in a neighborhood and I don’t want to lose them to dogs that occasionally run around.

What is the best, inexpensive fencing to keep chooks out of garden?

I guess mine aren't that determined to get in the garden. I put in the cheap rabbit fencing and that has kept the girls out of our 8'x8' raised bed garden where they previously spent a lot of time scratching. It wouldn't be practical for a real sized garden, though. I am sure we'll need to...

How many of you use foodgrade DE?

I ended up getting a 50# bag because that was the best deal at the local feed store. What application rate do you use in the coop? I was planning to use a flour suffer to apply to.my garden plants, but was unsure about in the coop. TIA

A few questions from a newbie

Like other posters said, my hens all like to lay in the same box: 8 hens 3 nesting boxes. They all fight over the same box. I've gone out and found 2 hens in the same box together leaving the other 2 boxes empty.

    Opinions on cochins and australorps

I've got 4 Australorps and they are calm and friendly. 2 of them follow me around when I'm working in the yard and they let my kids pet them and pick them up. I love reading outside to their chattering. The other 2 are more timid, but I like my Ausrtalorps better then our last flock of Aracunas...

    Gardening: Chicken Poo for Fertilizer?

I agree with those who say to let it sit. We clean the coop and compost it with other composting in the fall then and add the mixture to the garden in the spring. Has worked well for the past 4 years. Great veggies!

How many of you use foodgrade DE?

I've got a flock of 8 and not much storage space. I know I don't need 50#. How long do you think a 5# bag would last?

Can I get a quick question? Cold and wet chickens!

We've had a really wet winter with nighttime temps in the 30's and 40's. Orr girls spent lots of time out in the rain by choice. I'm sure yours will be fine. We never toweled them off or anything. They just slept huddled together when they went in for the night and were out in the rain the next...
