    Chick with no eyes... suggestions?

Nope...I never could get the little guy to eat on its own no matter how hard I tried. Managed to survive 4 days with me feeding it. Sadly I think it had other issues going on besides the lack of eyes.

    Chick with no eyes... suggestions?

We think that might be the case, another brain defect. It does try to eat but “swipes” at the food. I set my alarm to wake up every few hours to poke some food in its beak, hoping to trigger some positive reaction but realize it might not make it.

    Chick with no eyes... suggestions?

If it has eaten it is not enough to live much longer. It is bones compared to the other 7 and very lethargic.

    Chick with no eyes... suggestions?

I had an appointment this morning and afterwards ran by tractor supply for feed, I bought some chicks because I have no self control. I picked out 8 little bantam cochins and grabbed this little guy last. It was not until I got home I realized he has no eyes. My guess is he/she had not eaten...

(Well-meaning) human predators in the chicken run, Oh No!

Add master locks. I would be worried someone would show up when I wasn’t at home and you would have the same issue. Not necessarily those children but another one or two visiting. I used to keep master locks on mine years ago because I would have visitors whose kids would head straight to the...

    Breed suggestion?

They do have a neck stripe like the African but no knobs (no clue when those show up). Half of them have black beaks and half have orange ones. I remember we had geese growing up, multiple different breeds and the African ones were always in the front of the group and nothing messed with them.

    Breed suggestion?

I got 8 geese earlier this year at a farmers market, they were hatched out Easter weekend so they are around 2 and a half months old. The guy said they were mixed and at the time I should have asked what mix they were. I assumed the brown were toulouse and the white were chinese but now I...

    Battery powered heated waterer.

I used a propane stocktank heater in a small hog type water tank for years to water my flock. The tank sits outside the run and I cut a hole through the fence for the drinking part so the birds can reach it. Since I am rebuilding my run this winter and my birds are barricaded in the coop I have...

    Rebuilding the “ground”

WOW, I haven’t been on here in ages!!! So...I recently downsized my flock to a fraction of what I had. My coops and runs need serious work on them. I have 2 coops each with a 30’ x 40’ run attached to the back. I have downsized my flock enough where 1 coop/run is more then enough space. My...

Little gray/black fly things biting my chickens

You can spray them with Vanilla, it will work but is temporary. I've heard skin-so-soft wiped on their comb and feathers works. If they get really bad it might be a good idea to lock them in their coops and spray permethrin outside the coop and run. Gnats have a short life cycle. Usually in a...

Little gray/black fly things biting my chickens

Look up buffalo gnat and see if that is what they are. They can kill your chickens (believe it or not) by biting them and/or blocking their nostrils. Some years they can be a huge issues and I spray my birds with vanilla and burn citronella torches in the runs.

    Old hens and poor circulation?

I'm in the Midwest and we've only had a few weeks of cold 15-20 degrees and no snow where I'm located. Yesterday I noticed one of my old silkie hens walking weird and her toes were frozen. This morning one of my other older silkie hens was dead. Both of her feet had suffered severe frostbite -...

HOW MUCH "DAILY FEED" IS TOO MUCH FEED??

I have two 5 gallon hanging feeders and I always have a flock block out for 30 hens (bantams). I only refill the feeders on the weekend and they do have some feed left in them from the week before. Rodent control for me is the biggest issue for wasted feed. Every few weeks I put down baited &...

    "Wild" Peacock

Peafowl are loud, especially during mating season. I've got my trio in covered pens. Every once in a while one will get out and take off for a day or two but they always come back. I've thought about letting mine free range but I'm sure my neighbors would be very unhappy to find one on their...

    Black Panther

There is really no way to judge size (IMO) by the pic - I can tell it's a cat of some sort. About 8 years ago my sister said she saw a cougar in her backyard. She lives about 50 miles north of me in Missouri. Some of my family members (me included) said she was nuts. We joked about the gaint...

    Squirrels stealing chicken feed

Just a thought... can you put pepper in the chicken's feed? I had a co-worker talking about putting pepper around her bird feeders to keep the squirrels out; apparently they hate the taste. My chickens don't seem to be bothered by leftovers seasoned with pepper or chili powder. Of course...

    Holiday gifts for your chickens?

I bought mine some chicken toy treat balls (kind of like the ones for dogs where you hide the treats inside) and a 10oz container of mealworms. The holidays give me an excuse to buy something I want for them but they don't really need... No little chickie stockings but they did get a wreath...

Hatched silkie with tumor on wing!

I've had chicks hatch out with what you are talking about. They absorbed it within a week and were fine. I'm not sure what caused it, but I have never seen it in any chicks my hens hatched out only in ones hatched from the incubator.

    Why All The "Junk"?

In order for someone to salvage or recycle something I think the original owner would have to consider it junk/trash. Both of my coops were originally my grandmother's and she passed away in 1984. She had them built from re-cycled lumber from a demolished house that was from the 1930's era...

All 3 bantams died. Desperately trying to find the cause...

I say they were soaked from the rain and got chilled, especially since that breed doesn't have much body mass. If it was raining hard enough they might not have been able to see good enough to get back into the coop. A few years ago there was an ice/snow storm and a few of my chickens froze...
