I've been pouring through all your threads on lighting the coop and am thinking about it. (And you all are a wealth of info.!)
So, now that I know "how," my question is "Should I?" I read on another site that lighting the coop might cause them to molt early, leaving them without feathers during...
DH and I are building a SECOND coop this weekend (we have a 4x8 coop, but, we couldn't stop buying chicks...!). These chicks were born the end of May, so they're almost three months old. We're going to be using 5 gallon buckets for nests. Should we put these buckets in the new coop right away...
I might be a really bad chicken keeper, but mine were outside at four weeks (which was the mid to end of June). We built them a coop and run that is like a battleship, so we aren't worried about anything getting to them!
They've been free-ranging all about my yard for two weeks now. They LOVE...
I want to give mine a sandy area to dust bathe in. Mine free range during the day - do I still need to make a sand box for them or will they do it on their own in the yard?
Also, what is DE and where do I buy it?

So, what should I be buying for our new ladies? (And one gentleman...hopefully...)
I'm totally new to this, but it makes sense to me to move them outside once they have their feathers. People have raised chickens successfully for hundreds (thousands???) of years without heat lamps in the coop! Good luck!!!
I've seen listing on Craigs List for hens who don't lay anymore, but who will keep baby chicks warm for those who need it! A nice retirement plan, I think!
I think Murray McMurray (online) has a limit of 6. It IS tough to find them around Bangor. We ordered ours from Blue Seal, but only because we wanted what they were offering (RIR, Wyandottes). You have to be QUICK at Tractor Supply, don't you? Those chicks go fast. We were there last weekend -...
I'm so glad I found you all!! I've been lurking for two weeks and figured it was time to introduce myself.
My hubby and I are getting our first chickens in May (we're getting pullets - 7 Rhode Island Red hens, 1 roo, and 8 Silver-laced Wyandotts). We have a coop already (a friend gave us his...
