Never Thought It Would Be A Bear.....

When I got my first small flock of Silkie chickens this past Spring, I never thought I'd lose them....let alone to a bear. I figured if anything ever got to them, it would be a fox....we have like 100s of foxes around us. But sadly, the other morning around 9:30am I looked out my front door to...

    Moved Them Outside!!

I just moved my approx. 12 week Silkies outside finally! They are not in their coop yet, because the fencing needs to be finished. But, they are in their brooder which is being kept under our screened in tent. The tent is covered on the top, so rain cant pour down on them, and secured well to...

My Babies Got A BIG Brooder :)

So tonight, I finished building the BIG brooder for my 3 silkie chickies! They were just in a tote, but they were getting so big, so fast and they had very little room as of today to really move around at all. I set up a HUGE cardboard box I had left over from a x-mas present, filled it...

Any Idea How Old My Babies Are??

I bought these Silkie chicks on Saturday, April 9th at TSC, and they didn't tell me how old they were. They have shot up a ton and are feathering out so fast, especially the past few days and they just seem really big all of a sudden LOL. Can anyone tell based on the pics about how old they...

    Coop size??

So, I have 3 Silkie chicks, and am working on the plans for the coop. Right now I have it basically as a 6'x6' floor, is that enough floor space for the 3 of them? Oh, and the back wall will be 4' tall, front wall will be 5' tall. So overall, would this generally be enough room for the 3 Silkies?

    Cranky Chicks?

Today my 3 lil chicks seem really cranky and sleepy. They were super quiet all night last night, and have been really quiet today. They are sleeping almost everytime I go to check on them, and if they wake up, and I try to interact with them, they really do seem just...welll...CRANKY! They did...

The Personalities Of My Silkies *PICS*

It's taken a few days of spending time w/my chicks, watching them and interacting with them, to really see the fun personality traits of each one. They are all such lil individuals! *pics of each chick mentioned below their description!* First there is Twinkie, she was immediately my fave lil...

    My Silkie Chicks

The are probably just over a week old now, not 100% sure since no one knew how old they were when I bought them last Saturday from TSC. Anyway, I have 4 and they are all colored the same. I'm not sure if they are white or buff silkies though. Can anyone tell? This is Racket, my noisiest lil...

My Chick Is Sick....Or Something! HELP!

So, we had suddenly lost one chick over night last night. No signs that anything was off with the poor lil thing. But now, tonight, one of our other lil babies is acting funny. The chick seems to tumble and fall when walking, and when it lays down, it kinda just falls down and lays on its side...

    Brooder Temp

I got my silkie chicks @ TSC on Saturday, and I'm not 100% sure how old they are. They can't be more than a week old, but I don't know for sure. Anyways, when the brooder temp is at 90* they seem like it's really warm, and they spread way out away from the light. So I had it at about 80-85* and...

    Lost 1 Baby Overnight

I woke up this morning to one of my lil silkie babies laying in the corner of the brooder, dead. I don't know what happened, but I think maybe the temperature was too high? When I checked the thermometer in the brooder after I found the lil baby, it was at 100deg. The other 4 seem ok, but I...
