Two 8 wk old pearl guineas

I'd like to rehome 2 8wk old pearl guineas - I am almost certain they are both male as neither does the 2 tone female call. I recently lost their guinea flockmates to a fox and would not feel comfortable free-ranging just two guineas. They are with chicken pullets now (and have been) and do...

What predator leaves feathers of 1 hen and takes 2 w/ no trace?

We lost 3 guineas to a fox that got in our garage a few nights ago. Our brooder (they were 2.5 months old but big) wasn't terribly secure (garage door wasn't latched properly). It carried off 3 without a trace...except that I saw her carrying one across the pasture. I had to have a fourth put...

    livestock quard dog? which breed?

Quote: This was the original question and info given: if we should look into a livestock guarding breed? We have 10 acres unfenced I see no "disrespect" or nothing "off track" in giving honest answers based on realities and real world experience. It takes a lot of work and even more luck...

    livestock quard dog? which breed?

Can we be respectful to the OP and stick to her original question about suitable breeds? I know there are strong feelings out there and it's easy to get off track... Perhaps opening a new thread about how or whether to pen guard dogs is a good idea.

Maryland Poultry Swap & Farmer's Market **UPDATED w/ PICS pg.43**

Is there some sort of prayer for self control you can do before a poultry swap? I found myself looking up rabbit breeds this morning... Need I remind everyone that my coop-to-be will be on display at the show so I don't even have a permanent home until this week? Plenty of brooder/cage/small...

Does a loud chick indicate a possible roo?

I had a brooder full of BR's and one was extremely loud. My daughter picked it for that reason and I swore it was going to be a roo. It turned out to be a pullet and every time I heard her I knew the food dish was running low or the water had become shaving filled!

    Daily/Weekly Routines with Chicks?

TREATS! Mine became awfully friendly once they realized I doled out goodies. That being said, 25 is an awful lot to try and hand tame at once. I don't know how much time you have to devote, but just grab one and pick it up for a few minutes each time you go by the pen.

I would NOT want to faint in a chicken coop!

This thread is hysterical. I'm new to chickens and the chicks have been pecking at my wedding ring...but I didn't even fathom the extent of their pecking!!

    Breed suggestions?

I have 4 pullets (three 8 weeks & one 2 week old) and 7 guinea keets and am aiming towards ending up with 6 or 7 hens plus or minus guineas depending on how this first year goes. I currently have a barred rock, buff orpington, feed store "Ameraucana", and a brahma. I'd like to stick with...

Keets and 12 week old chickens

Mine weren't quite as far apart in age as yours (more like 3 weeks keets and 6 weeks pullets), but they did fine. I gave them PLENTY of space. My BO pullet thought, and still thinks, that the guineas are crazy and can't stand them...but is also won't go after them because they are spastic. I...

Maryland Poultry Swap & Farmer's Market **UPDATED w/ PICS pg.43**

riane'smimi : Quote: Thanks I was told as long as they were NPIP it was fine.It was that you could buy out of state with no problem at all, but they changed it this past year.I know there's a hatchery that has stopped sending chicks here, but Mcmurrery still does as does Mt.healthy...

    livestock quard dog? which breed?

Your answer could depend on tons of factors. Can you be more specific about what's okay, and what's not? What kind of "dog" person are you (and the other members of the family)? Big/little, barking, high energy or lazy, will it be in the house alot? Many breeds of dogs bred for working...

Can I use my neighbors old tree trunk shavings/mulch in my coop?

You didn't mention what type of tree it is. That makes a big difference... oak or pine, sure. Some tree shavings (black walnut for example) are very toxic.

I am WOMAN..... as I beat my chest show you pictures of my coop!!

Really great job! Having a 2 year old at home and the weekends jam-packed with kid activities kept me from wanting to do it ourselves so we opted to have a shed built and converted (plus I wanted 8x10 and that was a little intimidating!). But my DH and I are putting together (just assembling)...

    What Incubator to get

I really love my brinsea ECO 20. I have the LG still air as well and just can't keep the humidity nearly as steady. No experience with anything else...or much of anything period! BUT, as a newbie this brinsea seems like a good fit for me.

FBCM - Wade Jeane/Bev Davis line

I bought FBCM hatching eggs (that hatched) from a reputable seller on ebay and am moving these three two week old chicks on. Pictures can be seen on the Black Copper Marans discussion thread (https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6660220#p6660220) pg 310, post 3097. They...

    Salmonella Outbreak From Baby Chicks

I keep hand sanitizer by the brooder to use before we even head to the sink to wash hands. I am still concerned though. I have a 2 year old as well who scales the baby gate and loves to come back and tell me how gentle she was by touching them with one finger!
