Review by '' on item 'Orpington'

This is my favorite breed of the four breeds I have (also RIR, BR, EE). These ladies are sweet and friendly and are good, reliable layers. They do tend to get a bit broody, but their sweet personality is worth the temporary lapse in egg production. I will definitely get some of these girls again!

    Fowl pox?

Thank you all for the info! I think I may just let it run its course since mosquitos are SO abundant here and I suspect they've all been exposed already. Presley-- I'm so sorry you're dealing with such a difficult situation... sounds heartbreaking!

    Fowl pox?

From other pictures I've seen, I'm assuming this is fowl pox... can anyone confirm? (I live in South FL, if that matters). If so... So far 2 of my 6 adults have it (the gal in the photo has it worst) and I've noticed my 3 5-month-old chicks haven't been developing very quickly lately. Should I...

    Shrimp - yay or nay?

We fish with live shrimp and always feed the girls the leftover bait. It makes for a fun game of chicken football!!

Hens + 4mo chicks... what do I feed them??

I recently put my (laying) hens and 4 month old chicks together... what should I feed them? It won't be possible to feed them seperately- is it OK for these chicks to have layer feed or do they need the extra protein/vitamins/etc. that's in chick food??

Succesful integration of chicks in with the grown-ups! :)

I did this this week too-- it IS a great feeling! I've got 6 full-grown hens that are now (happily?) cohabitating with 3 11-week old chicks. I'd had them in a dog cage in the coop since Easter or so to get them used to seeing each other but keeping the babies safe. The chicks spend most of their...

Aggression- how much is too much?

This week I put my chicks (now about 10 weeks old or so?) with my hens and SO FAR SO GOOD!! The first couple days/nights they huddled together in a corner of the coop (or in one of the nest boxes) but I haven't seen any injuries. They seem to be loosening up a bit but they still won't go out...

Aggression- how much is too much?

When I move her she gets aggitated. She jumps on top of things to get a high perspective on the yard and just tries to find the chicks again. When I finally (safely) locked the chicks in the chicken run she paced the side trying to figure out what to do. I know I'm pushing it when they're not...

Aggression- how much is too much?

I'm trying to slowly introduce my 8.5-week old EE chicks to my flock of 6 hens. They've been in a dog kennel in the coop for about 3-4 weeks and are starting to get really bored and pooping WAY too much for such a small space. I've let the out in the yard (free ranging) with the big girls a...

Tips for keeping chicks from sitting on top of waterer??

It's one of the upside-down plastic quart bottles so yes, it has a flat top. There's really only room for one chick on top so it is kind of a 'king of the mountain' game for them too! A plastic funnel is a good idea-- maybe I'll take a look around the Dollar Store!

Tips for keeping chicks from sitting on top of waterer??

My chicks have taken to sitting on top of the waterer... and pooping all day. I elevated it by sitting it up on a brick which is apparently no match for their keen hopping/flying skills. They have several perches- but alas, none are as good as the waterer. Tonight I tried to make a foil cone on...

    Egg size

Yes, they're fed free choice and have been getting plenty of food and water. Our temps have been getting high the last few days - maybe they're adjusting and not eating as much?? I'll keep an eye on them- thanks for the advice!!

    Hawks

My mom swears by reflective pinwheels to keep hawks out of her yard (perhaps the same idea as pie plates)... who knows if it really works though?!

    Egg size

My hens have been laying for almost 2 months. While their eggs started out small, they quickly got to a nice size and just this week it seems a couple of them are laying small eggs again. Is this normal??

    Greetings from Sunny FL!

Greetings from beautiful southwest Florida! I started with 6 chicks last October and have been stalking this forum for some time... so I decided to jump in! I've learned a tremendous amount since I started keeping my chickens... but I still know nothing other than they're absolutely hilarious...

What's in the bottom of your coop?

Our coop has peel-and-stick linoleum on top of plywood (for easy cleaning) with several inches of hay on top. The run started with vines/weeks that quickly turned to dirt and is now also covered in hay.

How long have you had chickens?

I'm going on 7 months and never would have thought I'd be so fascinated with these birds! From their quirky personalities to their hilarious antics to the egg song- I DEFINITELY understand the chicken obsession!
