    Random duck in my backyard?

Sounds like you have a new Muscovy!

    So excited! First ducks!

Isn’t he? Funny thing is, I think we actually watched him grow up! Pekins And geese are the waterfowl that are dumped (though I did see one crested and one runner mix once...but I think they maybe got eaten because they were gone in days). They then breed with the mallards and then this one...

    So excited! First ducks!

That’s so exciting! Runners seem like such fun, personable ducks, and what gorgeous colors you are getting them in. We knew right away we had to include at least one Runner!

    So excited! First ducks!

Muscovy ducks and mixes are so pretty! They come in so many colors too. I’ll have to get some newer and better shots of him, but this is what he looks like.

    So excited! First ducks!

So, a month ago my husband and I found a very sickly and injured Muscovy/Pekin cross by a river ducks sometimes get dumped at (these aren’t city/resident ducks). Even though he is very feral, he was super easy to catch because he was weak and had a lame leg. After a lot of food and care, he...

    LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

Barely Birding, heartbreaking that you and others face such push back for just being yourself. I live an hour north of Austin. You and anyone else on here, give me a holler if you are around these parts! Always looking for open-minded rural friends around here. Also just available as an ear or a...

    LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

I have a few LGBTQIA friends near me who have chickens or ducks in the city! I'll have to tell them about this thread. Thank you for making it! <3 I live just a ways out in the country. Unfortunately, this is an area where several LGBTQIA kids here have been kicked out of their homes; and many...

SILKIE DUCKS??? For Adoption in North Carolina!!

I could be wrong, but aren't these Black Silkie Ducks and not Cayugas? Silkies are so hard to find, that if they are silkies, I want people to know they are there!! EDIT: LOL! A link might help, yeah? These are the ducks that look like maybe they are black silkies (the older mallard type, not...

Central Texas- Teacher for Caponizing Wanted (Bertram area)

Looking for someone to teach me how to caponize. I had two chicks die (gender unknown) and opened them up to see how hard caponizing would be for me. Apparently very hard as I could not find any sexual organs in either of them. I'd love for someone knowledgable to show me how it is done. Thanks!

Current Movies - Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN

Saw 'Boyhood' with some other Linklater loving friends and enjoyed it even more than I thought I would. It was neat seeing some music venues and cafés we frequent show up in the film too.

    Outdoor rabbit A/C

I'm thinking of doing the same, but with a more adobe type home (portable) with a window unit and a portable cattle panel run. Now that we have some land, it would be nice to have a setup that lets our rabbits graze all they want. But, I worry about just tossing them outside as they've been...

Why are my heritage birds not gaining weight?

Oops sorry, I started my post before yours went through. I would browse some of the heritage bird threads and compare the birds from breeders who are hailed as raising good meat birds/are approaching or meeting SOPs to the birds from your breeder, and then go from there.

Why are my heritage birds not gaining weight?

Are these birds from hatcheries, or dedicated breeders? If hatcheries, you may be getting birds very far off from the standard. Leaner birds that are bred more for laying eggs (hatcheries are in the business of selling chicks not chicken dinners after all) is one commonly reported issue. The...

What to use on the bottom if my coop

Personally, I like poop boards under perches with scoopable Sweet PDZ (scoop daily) with sand for the ground. I'd only use sand in covered areas though, I just do dirt and a rake if they are perching in an outdoor run.

    B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

Thanks all who offered advice a while back. My eggs have gone from infertile to fertile. Most recently, out of a pile of 7 eggs, one chick hatched. Super healthy chick (red dorking) and I hope it will be a hen as I need chicks much more than I need chicken dinners right now. Three other eggs...

    Foster Parents/ Adoption

Nayeli, it sounds like you have a lot to offer children who come under your care, and I hope you keep pursuing fostering! I do want to touch on the topic of infants versus older children. I think staying within your comfort zones for ages, especially when starting out in parenting and...

DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

Your post was helpful and thoughtful LeeBrad, and I don't mean to disregard the whole of your post by addressing only a small sentence from it. Gassing is used to stun/kill poultry, and the bird is bled out. Stunning a bird with gas means it bleeds out to the same extent as birds stunned using...

    The Anxiety Chat Thread

Yeah, I tried cutting corn, wheat, dairy, etc. I thought cutting the wheat was helping at first, but it ending up just being the reduced carbs that helped me out. I know many can have sensitivities though, and can benefit from cutting them. :) Auto-immune issues like Celiac's disease are on...
