i have a hen with a broken leg. I stepped on her! Please be careful. It doesn't feel good. Anyway, she is fine but can't walk. I wrapped the leg and it is straight. She won't move. Any suggestions?
Any hardware Store will have small cans of PVC cleaner and glue. You use the cleaner first, then the glue. Give the fittings a half turn or so and hold in place for 20 sec or so. Mark the pipe and fittings with a crayon or sharply so you can line up the pipe and fitting before it sets up...
I know there are lots of posts on this subject but what I am trying to figure out is how should I handle the hens. I have 7 Buff Os. There is one or now two brooding all the time. I kick them off the nest to collect the eggs. All winter I would get the hen off the nest and put her on the...
I thought this would be a good thread but so far all I see is people jawing about nothing chicken related.
I am an old timer with 1 year of chicken raising. My sage advice is that chickens are chickens and will do what chickens have been doing for centuries.
Why isn't my chicken doing this yet...
I love the chicken nipples. I have a 5 gal cooler with a pump and heater. It is controlled with a thermostat that kicks on at about 35 degrees. It circulates the water through the coop and down to the run, back to the cooler. Works great. nothing to get dirty, the birds love it. No problem down...
The "CackleBerry Castle" Project.
My plan is to organize this site. But some info any way. A 50 Lb bag of layer pellets fits nicely into a 10 gal. galvanizes trash can (about $22). I looked for something cheaper but for me nothing worked as well as the galvanized can. I am thinking I need...
There must be different type of pine needles depending where you live. The ones I use are not at all sticky or sharp. They are like grass but a little firmer. A lot softer than straw. After a day or so the nest they make remindes me of a big robbin's nest. The bottom stays soft and the sides...
I had the same problem with pine shavings. I have pine trees by the coop so I tried pine needles. They love it. It forms a nice round nest and last a long time. Every so often I just add a handfull or two of needles and it works great.

OK This is as cool as it gets. The girls were making a racket so my wife and I went out to check.
One of the hens was in the house part of the coop. My coop design is such that when you open the
door the floor is at waste height. A hen was "nesting" in the...

He is lucky ya didn't turn him into soup!! Hopefully his new flockmates will mellow him a bit. Ya did the right thing. Imagine how horid you would feel if his departure gift had landed on one of your grandchildren instead of you!!
UPDATE The roo attacked the guy trying to move him...
Thanks for the replies. I am sorry to see my roo go as the dynamic was cool. We will miss him. However I don't need him for protection as my hens don't free range. And bottom line is I have three young 2, 3, and 6 year old grand kids who love the chickens and like to go into the run to feed...
Wow! I just answered my question by reading these posts. My question was is it worth it to me to keep my roo. My answer is NO. I built my coop for 8 hens. I got 7 hens and 1 rooster. They are about 18 weeks old. I really like the dynamics of the flock, but the roo has taken to attacking...
