I'm Karen Turner. Ben was there. We have raised chickens for several years. This is Ben's 2nd year in the 4h chicken project. He is in the 10th grade at Heritage. I look forward to your pics.
This past fall was the first time I had butchered hens ( besides cornish x hens) and I was amazed at the richness of the broth from the older ones. I canned the meat and canned broth from them. They won't be friers, but they're great in soup, dumplings or canned for casseroles. My plan is to...
Tiff, Please keep us updated. I am very interested in this project. I would love to not have to rely on those hatchery cornish x that, for whatever reason, just die. I do use every extra roo, no matter how scrawny, but a capon that could be left alive until I needed it would be great. I...
I butchered four bantam cochins two weeks ago. They made delicious soup that I canned. They were mean little roos and that made it easier. I just skinned them. Good luck. Karen
Child services will be knocking on your door unless the page is private. Second will be animal rights or maybe they'll be first.
At any rate, it is cute. My 15 y.o. did a "how to" speech on butchering a chicken and was told he was mean by another student. They need to know where the food...
That's a good job on the plucker you did and some excellent looking chickens! I hope to get one of those built before my next batch of chickeny goodness.

I raise my barred rocks to 16 wks and they are still tender enough for frying. Excellent flavor. The size (about 3 pounds) is the only drawback. Well, keeping them 16 weeks is too, I guess. They don't give me as many problems as cornish x, but I like to raise the X's because of the short...
I raised my first cornish x this spring and I will tell you that they are much better than store birds. I also raise dual purpose for meat and, to me, they (dual purpose) are even better. The only drawback with dp is the size and I let them go for 16 weeks. Your home grown cornish will be...
I do it as a series of steps with each step outlined in my mind. I don't think about the whole process. I use a killing cone and cut the arteries on each side of the neck. My husband likes chopping the head off better, but I lack the coordination to do that alone. It's not something I look...
I am raising some barred rocks whose time is close. I have eaten barred rock and rhode island red and both were delicious. I am going to get some straight cornish and cross with my layers next year. I raised cornishx this spring and I must say, they taste better than store chicken even though...
Great job! Nothing beats homemade stock. You are reaping the rewards of raising your own chickens. I just raised my first batch of meat chickens this spring and, while the processing troubled me a bit, I am determined to not buy grocery store chicken again.
Karen
Congratulations on your accomplishment. I would love to see pictures. I raised cornish x for the first time this year and butchered them myself. I plucked the first, but skinned the rest. I had no problems gutting but the killing was hard at first. Next time I want to try the rangers...
I agree with Mahonri. There's no way the U.S. is prepared for a real epidemic. However, this one seems to be no different than the usual flu we have making the rounds. And I disagree that the uninsured will be the ones to die. They will go to the emergency room. Around here nobody gets...
There was a big one in Knoxville, TN. The paper said 1700 showed up, but the TV news said 2000-3000.
We need to ramp it up though. We need to have more and have them when more people can come. I don't think the people who watched the network news got a full view of how big a lot of these...
I love my broody hens. I doubt I will ever use an incubator. Now, you can't buy special breed eggs if you're not sure there will be a broody hen to put them under, but if it's eggs from your own flock and constantly available, a broody can't be beat. It's like automatic pilot for incubation...
