    Buff Orpington/Rhode Island Red cross

Ok guys, Haven't found much info about this particular cross breed here or anywhere else for that matter. If anyone has info on these birds please post. I have 12 right now at 11 days old and I'm keepin' tabs on em as far as age, size and maturity. I'm gonna keep postin' updates but if anyone...

Skittish chicks... They can be tamed.

thanks for the ideas. Got 6 lil ones that are about 3 weeks right now and another 12 that are hittin up around the 6-7 week mark and they're all still a lil skiddish. I handled the older ones as chicks and even now hopefully they'll calm down soon. And the little ones are still in the brooder...

    What to feed?

My thoughts were that they grow SO fast from birth to 4-5 weeks that a lil extra protein would help them to not have any muscle issues. Also I thought about mixin the 24% and 18% i have to reach that 20& level that's mostly recommended for young chicks. Very valid points though in the over...

    What to feed?

Hey guys need input. Was thinkin bout startin my new chicks out on a 24% protein game bird chick starter and then changin it to a regular 18-20% protein crumble. Will this have any adverse affects in the chicks or is that perfectly fine?

    calling all breed experts!

It could be a possibility. I've looked at some online but haven't ever had any. So I know it ain't much help but. As I would always say "GOOGLE IT!" Hope you find out soon.

    Outdoor Run Designs

Very Nice. I was thinkin about usin a completely covered dog kennel as a coop and then buildin a run onto it later on. It'll take a lil time, they're still kinda small. But that's alright just gives my time Hope all goes well with y'alls.

    Today at Meyer Hatchery.....

Been lookin at a good hatchery to get a few RI and NHR's from. Does Meyer have a good quality and have any of y'all had any problems with them? I was also thinkin distance I live in Arkansas and there's no "hop, skip and a jump" your way into Ohio. So would it be better to look for a closer...

    My new brooder, well almost....

Very nice lookin. Sorta similar to mine (except mine ain't a 2 story ) But same general idea. You should think about makin it to where you can separate both levels though. I have mine built to where I can slide a piece of plywood between it as well as pull it out to give more room. Just a...

    What size brooder?

Nice BigW. Must say a HUGE well done for the creativity and effectiveness of this design. I built mine out of some old lumber I had in the shop. Which is good and bad. But I think for practical purposes of mobility I'll have to try this out. Not like I'm NOT gonna have enough chicks here in a...

    what is better for brooder

Is there a chance of their toes gettin stuck in the wire and breaking? Cuz I though about that about the time I finished it and thought maybe puttin cardboard on the bottom would do until they were 3 or 4 weeks old. Just a thought. If ya would please help me out with ideas. I don't want my lil...

    what is better for brooder

I built my brooder just out of recycled 2X4's and some old plywood. Used small wire around the bottom and a piece of plexi-glass underneath that. I built mine where you can divide it though. Just in case I have to quarantine a couple later on. But I've used plastic tubs and they work GREAT. So...

    New brooder, new chicken house

Dadgum, I could live in that thang and have the space to rent rooms. Seriously though VERY NICE. Wish I had one like that . I'm just startin out and I just have a lil ol coop/run combo. Though I built it myself still wish I could've done a lil better job on it. But I guess over time I'll add on...

Gravity feeder with PVC and a galvanized garbage pail (PICS)

Very Nice. Once I get my chicken coop organized and the essentials in it I'll MAKE room for one of these. Thanks for the idea.

pics of homemade waters and feeders

That's AWESOME!! I'm SO gonna build me one. But I think I may try to put a larger bucket on top to hold more water. Thanks for the idea.

Homemade chicken feeder and waterer pics please!

Kesha, Would it be better if I used a y couplin and then 2; 45 degree elbows to level it to the ground. Or would it not have enough pressure to make it very affective.

    CANNOT catch the raccoon!!

Also with a live trap make sure it can see all the way through it. If they can see a back then it usually won't go in. Also I prefer the whole 12-Gauge bit but I'm from Arkansas so what do you expect. I would rather kill the lil suckers than to make them "someone elses problem". But hope you get...

What would kill but not eat?

Weasels and Minks can be a big problem. Haven't had any "yet" but trust me they're terrible. They kill the chickens and just leave em lay and drink their blood. It's almost satanic lookin the way it turns up. And the worst is that if they can get their tiny lil nose through a hole they can...
