Sad weekend for us, info needed....

So, we had been free-ranging our ducks for a little over a month now. They loved it and did great. On Saturday, though, one of our ducks were killed by one of our dogs. Now our remaining duck isnt eating well. I think he is sad and scared, having witnessed his brother get killed. Will ducks...

    free range or run??

We do both. During the day, they run loose. We have 2 big dogs that are good with the ducks, but would kill any other animal. So they run our property, sticking pretty close to the dogs. At night, they are in a chain link dog run, with 2 dog houses for sleeping. A predator could dig under...

    Crease in feathers...

One of our ducks has what looks like a crease in its feathers on its breastbone. A better description would be that someone took a comb and parted the feathers. You cant see skin, just a distinct, part line down its breast. Could this be a female duck?

    Make money with Ducks?

I am not sure about the $ thing, like the pp said there has to be interest. About the feed, that seems really high. I usually get mine at TSC too, but i pay like $8/bag. I would try a local feed store if you have one, if not then try Rural King or maybe someone online...there might even be...

    Free ranging....

Thanks everyone! Yesterday we let them free range for about 2 hrs, supervised. They had a lot of fun rooting for bugs in the leaf pile. It took them about 20 mins and then my fiance went into the pen and herded them out, they looked confused and i imagine their duck conversation was about...

Opinions needed please! What kind of duck?

I highly recommend Swedish Blues. They are medium sized, dont fly, quiet and good with my 3 yr old. Lol. They dont let us pet them, but honestly we didnt handle them a lot when they were babies. They usually maintain a distance of 3 ft from us when we are in the pen. Mine do just fine with...

    Free ranging....

I have a question about free ranging, part-time. We have 2 Swedish blue's, i believe they are male. Down where we live, everyone free ranges their chickens during the day, so it made me think about our ducks. For those that do or have free ranged, how do you get them back in their pens at...

I am Marsha, 33 yrs old, mother to 2 children (Samantha is almost 3 & Charlotte is 10 mos) & one on the way. About a week before Easter, our neighbor gave us 2 ducklings. They are Swedish Blues. We named them Scooter & Skeeter. So, they being our first ducks, i have some newbie questions...
