Feather loss around necks of birds "HELP"

The bug in the picture is a Collembola which are also called springtails. They eat decomposing stuff and you find them in leaf litter. They are harmless and probably chowing on organic matter around the coop.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Yay broody chicken mammas! I have a broody who has been on eggs for about a week and I'm noticing her poops are getting really lose. I saw an earlier comment about switching to a leaner feed to help with this. Does 'lean' mean less protein or more? I am over thinking it but my feed store doesn't...

For real broody or just pretending?

Quote: Thanks! This is what I was wondering about. We do hope to one day use her as a broody hen.

For real broody or just pretending?

Hi everyone, I have a silkie/cochin whose been laying for about 2 weeks now and just this Saturday she decided to go broody. We don't have fertile eggs, so I collected the eggs (1 belonged to our EE and the other to her), pulled her out of the nesting box and then closed the nesting box for the...

Second post and its still not a good one, EDIT video on page 2 help..

Spiders of that size wouldn't pose an issue for the chick and young spiders generally disperse themselves fairly quickly so they shouldn't be around very long. You've got something else going on.

    Introducing the NEW Girls ...

Quote: Thank you, that was lots of fun reading... and I've wondered what this new impulse is to want more chickens, and maybe now some ducks, and yes hair sheep do okay in the tropics.... And I see now it's just the chicken math.

How much handling is ok, and how do you get them used to you?

Lots of great advice already. I found that my chicks really responded to sound, so using soothing noises around them can help. You'll see as they get older they'll respond to voice since they'll equate you with food or free range time or whatever. I think you can and should do your best to spend...

How much would you pay for PET/CHICKEN SITTING ?

We have the luxury of not having to close and open the coop. We're in Hawaii so don't have a predator problem. The chickens put themselves to bed at night and are able to come out in the morning when they're ready. So we only need one visit a day to check food and water and gather eggs. If we...

    Need opinions on this cage

That's really beautiful. Animal-wise, I think it's best suited for reptiles (lizards, anoles, geckos, some frogs (desert kind given how open the cage is) given the way the doors open, the overall design, etc. It could also make a beautiful terrarium using plant species that don't need high humidity.

    Socializing chicks

Yes, spend as much time with them as you can. In my experience it takes at least three days to a week to see any changes. We've taken in abandoned feral chicks who are really freaked out at being handled. We don't pick them up at first so much as try and give them hand snuggles while they're...

Hello from Hilo, Hawaii - land of feral chickens

Quote: We have a lot of cinder in our yard and they do pick it up. I haven't supplied them with anything since they seem to be getting what they need from the yard. Thanks for the welcome!

Hello from Hilo, Hawaii - land of feral chickens

Hi Everyone! We are living on a part of Big Island with lots of feral chickens running about. The feral cats do a pretty good number on the chicks around here and we've always thought about grabbing a few and raising them before the cats take them out. A few months ago we finally did nab a chick...

    raising wild chicks

Quote: To follow up on this several weeks later... Turns out our feral chicken was indeed a roo. He started crowing at around 4 months and seemed to have hit his crowing stride at 4.5 months. We had to part with him since we can't keep roosters. We used the Meat Birds sticky thread on how to...

Is it okay to feed pullets yogurt?

Quote: They will catch on. I started mine out with yogurt using something small and flat like a salsa lid and held it out to them to peck at. I might have even tapped my finger in it to get them to peck at it... Once they make the connection the color of the container won't matter. I actually...

    raising wild chicks

I also live on Big Island (Hilo) and we see the same attrition with feral chicks around our house. We managed to catch a very young chick (probaby 2 days old) from a feral mom. We've had 'her' now for about 5 weeks. She will free range around the yard with us staying close and we can easily pick...
