Chickweed! I know it's a weed, but there's a reason it's named that, and it grows so fast all you'd need are a few clippings and you'd have a feast for you girls in no time. But if you dont want a weed, then just some simple lettuce, or clover like was suggested above is definitely a favorite.
Wow, those are some LUCKY birds!! And as to the run question leaving it as dirt is fine, they'll scratch everything up anyway, but my girls loved it when we put in some mulch for them to pick through. Throwing in some of the grass cuttings when you mow the lawn is also good.

Wow, that's awesome, looks like a palace but it a nice, woodsy way! You got some lucky chicks, especially seeing as you've put so much time into it and I know how that feels. It took us a good 3 months of every day after work until dark to get ours finished, but ours isnt as big as yours!
