    Cost Breakdown of Ownership

I appreciate the responses to this. For the sake of honesty, I did not keep exacting records of the costs shown above, but I believe that my figures are reasonable based on the records I did keep. Personally, I consider the coop that I built a part of my landscaping. I made it prettier than...

    Cost Breakdown of Ownership

If you're trying to sell your eggs for a profit you'll want to think less of what your current average $/dozen is and more of what your future (stabilized) average $/dozen will be. I don't think I'm there yet, but by next year it'll taper off. The blue line will eventually approximate the red...

    Cost Breakdown of Ownership

I'm a bit of a nerd, but I charted the average cost of chicken ownership as measured in dollars per dozen eggs over a two year period. I started my flock in March of 2011 and started getting eggs from the 6 birds in September 2011. I spent about $400 on the coop and covered run, but for the...

Hens aren't laying in nest boxes.....

My pullets started to lay a couple weeks ago. The first started off laying in a corner of the coop and couldn't be convinced otherwise. In a moment of inspiration I found a brick nearby, put it in the corner where she was laying, and the next day found an egg in the nest box. The other...

Learning to use the egg box - SUCCESS!

Come to think of it, I've used bricks to help with a lot of chicken issues. Bricks helped them to not spill their food, keeps them from digging under their run, and now it got them to use the nesting boxes. Perfect. If I had meat chickens I might recommend another use...

Learning to use the egg box - SUCCESS!

One of my hens (Silver-Laced Wyandotte, 20 weeks) started laying before I had the nest boxes complete. I found a little pile of eggs in the corner of their coop. I finished the egg boxes and hoped thats he would change her mind about laying out in the open. Nope. For the next few days she...

I just bought my first 10 lbs of Food Grade DE, but I have a conspiracy theory about it. My plan is to use it around the coop and the run to help keep the flies and bugs down, but I keep reading of all these people using it as a cure all for everything. My guess is that when I finally get...

    EE Contest

This is my only EE, Henrietta at 1 week old. This is Henrietta a little older, around 11 weeks old with her admirer (Max). This is the aftermath of the picture above. . Henrietta is the top of the pecking order in our flock of six, but she's a sweet bird. She's probably the smartest of...

newbie needs help they wont roost

Nice. When I went out last night to help mine out, 4 out of 6 were in the coop and on the roost. The other two were still huddled against the door, but there's definite improvement.

newbie needs help they wont roost

My birds are a little older (11 weeks), but they're just starting to get the idea of this roost thing. For the past 3 nights I've had to put them on it at night. The first night I managed to get 4 out of 6 to stay on the roost (the other two fell off and didn't want to try again). The second...

    Kids and chickens contest!

This was taken just after the first picture where they're looking at each other. The baby is done, but Henrietta doesn't understand what the problem is. Apparently she invaded his "bubble." By the way, that's not the start of a smile...it's the start of full-on panic. What terrible parents!

Quote: yes -- feed stores tend to call those chicks "ameracaunas", "americanas", and even "aracaunas" --- however they don't conform to the breed standards of Ameraucanas nor Araucanas -- the breeders of those are very protective of their breed names, and get quite huffy when someone claims...

    The new (human) baby thread...

This is my little boy who just turned one yesterday. He's chilling with our Easter Egger (cross-bred with a hawk). I put the chicken next to him, but she was way too curious and climbed right on his legs. He gave her a couple little pats on the head, and she gave him a friendly tap on the...

Interesting, I was just going with what the feed store had the chicks labeled as. I wasn't sure if anyone had good reason for a preference over Easter Egger vs Ameraucana. I'll go with Easter Egger (EE). Easier to spell.

This is my 10 week old hen, Henrietta (pictured on right). She's not laying yet, so no clue what her eggs will look like. Pictured on left is my 1 year old human roo. We named him Max.

Quote: What an awesome photo!!! The color blend if fabulous!!! Was it professionally done? Definitely not professionally done. I'm 100% amateur. It turned out pretty nice, though. I added the blackish border using picasa, or picnik...I don't remember which. Thanks though!
