We used the plans from The Garden Coop for our run and purchased the Omlet Eglu Cube for the coop. I really can’t say enough about The Garden Coop plans and the structure itself. It looks awesome, it really does. It was great having a supplies list and measurements. We extended the length...
LOVE IT!!!! Nice job. We will be staining ours this week before we put on the roof and wrap it in the hardware cloth (so dreading that job). Love the pix of the chick sitting on the stairs, adorable. BTW, love your sitting set-up too.
We purchased The Garden Coop plans and brother-in-law and hubby have been hard at work putting to together a modified version. We ended up going with the Eglu Cube for our hen house which we'll attach on the side, but we are using the plans to make our walk-in-run. We extended it from 9'6 to...
Hi Caity, we have 4 silkie's that are 4 weeks old, but I'm pretty certain 2 of those are roosters. The roosters will be going back to the feed store for a new home since we can't keep roosters where we live. It stinks because you do get so attached to them. We also have 1 Easter Egger, 1 Buff...
Caity, this looks GREAT!!! We are in the process of building The Garden Coop too. We are using the plans just to build our run. I went back and forth with leaving it at 9'6" or making it 12', after reading your post I'm glad in a quick decision I went with the 12'. We have the four walls and...
Juan-n-Only, I was just about to post this same exact question. Has your wire held up okay with your staples and supplement screws? We just built our run and after looking at the poultry staples and hammer, the pneumatic stapler with 1" - 18 gauge - 1/4 crown staples seems like such an...
We picked up our Buff Orp, EE and Barred Rock yesterday from our local feed store, I noticed this evening the Buff Orp constantly had it's eyes closed. The EE and Barred Rock are snuggling and eating/drinking together, but the Buff Orp seems on its own. I checked for pasty butt about 5 hours...
I've seen a few threads where people add bantams to older chicks, but I have 4 Silkie's who will be 3 weeks old next Tuesday, we will be getting a BO, EE and barred rock next Wednesday. My plan is to keep the 3 new girls in a separate brooder for a few days to make sure they do well, then add...
My 7 year old daughter put one our 2 week old Silkie's (Fluffy) on her Barbie mermaid backdrop. These are our first chickens, we have 4 Silkie's and are adding a BO, Barred Rock and EE next week, can't wait - we love them soooo much.
Here's the whole crew;
I'm so glad I saw this, with living in Chicago I was concerned about sand in a covered run because of our frigid winters. I wondered whether I could throw something like pine or hay on top of the sand in the winter for added insulation, but didn't know if it would screw up the whole sand...
I just read through the 15 pages of this discussion and no one ever really answered the question of whether sand would be okay in a run in harsh winter? Run would be covered so not so much a wet issue as cold/freezing. Anyone??
floridagramps - amazing coop and run! Did you attach the hardware cloth to the underside of the 4x6 in any way (i.e. staple) or is it secured by the weight of the frame? Thanks.
I swear I get on this site and hours pass like seconds. I "thought" I was going to do deep litter in my run, but then I saw a thread on sand, this turned into about 3 hours of reading posts on deep litter vs. sand. Now I don't know what I should do. Run hasn't been constructed yet, but will...
I was on the fence about these guys, going with a barred rock, buff orp and didn't know whether an americana or australorp. I think you just made my decision for me, thanks!!! Added bonus of pretty eggs too =)
Thank you, I was thinking last night that my chances of 1 or 2 of these Silkie's being a rooster is pretty high too, right? Since they are hard to sex. Has that been an issue for anyone? It sounds like your chances are 50/50. Maybe 3 would be the way to go and re-home like you mentioned...
