My sussex always went broody, She was a good mom also. I also had an Orpington that occasionally went broody, but not as frequent as my sussex. I'm not quite sure if it was the breed or just the personality of the chicken.
I can't answer your question about the meat characteristics of your rooster as I too use my chickens for egg production. I pick my rooster for their personality and how well they treat and care for the hens. I want to be able to walk amongst my chickens as opposed of worrying where that rooster...
Oh wow....we also have occasional white squiggly lines and have owls. I never connected them. Thank you! I could never figure out what those lines were!
I have 5 others who haven't uttered a sound...6 months is usually the norm. I think my other two had a shot of testosterone...or what ever the chicken equivalent to that is.
I had 2 that crowed at 2 wks old and continued to crow every morning. They are now 12 wks old and we now have a third one crowing. The 2 initial ones were silkie/Cochin mix. My third one is a barnvelder. It's so funny watching them crow when they are so little.
Is it always just the comb or does the feathering play a part in it also? I have three all born 4 wks ago...3 just about fully feathered and one which has the same feathering as above. The all have the same personalities and are very friendly.
Welcome! I'm not too far from you.. right up rte 6 in Thomaston. Good luck with your coop project. Do you know what type of chickens you're going to get yet?
NoT sure about incubating them, but I know it takes a total of 25 days where you cannot eat the eggs.
First treatment, wait 10 days, treat again and wait about 15 days before you can eat the eggs.
Maybe someone else can chime in on incubating eggs.
Love my kindle, easy to travel with. I can read in the sun and there is no glare. I can keep track of what page I am on. I can switch between books and never lose my page. There are so many title choices that can be downloaded.
I used to travel with several books and they always added weight to...
That would be great. There is so much info on here that I wish I could bookmark a few threads sometimes. An email button would enable me to keep a really good thread handy for reference .
I picked brahma because I have a couple of them and they are really sweet and lovable. They are only about 8 months old and just started laying last month.
Welcome Adenium! They really are a source of enjoyment and to me are very comical to watch. Very happy with our decision to get chickens. My husband was not on board with this at all, hence the moniker, reluctant chicken, but, now he gets as excited as I do and never fails to help with them...
.
There is a Ct thread and there are many people in and around Meriden. Here is the thread to CT.
What kind of chicks are you getting?
I currently have some 9 mo old pullets but am expecting some chicks in 2 wks....can't wait! Some barnvelders, light sussex, americaunas marans and orpingtons...
