    flock missing - no signs!

Quote: do people really DO that?? the only other thing im considering is my neighbors have chickens and no fence. im the ladies flew over and went to the neighbors yard for a visit, they might have ended up in their coop last night. also - why would a predator (esp coyotes) go for my...

    flock missing - no signs!

i should have kept them penned in their run while i wasnt home, but hindsight is always 20-20, right? i guess i figured the 6' fence was enough to keep a predator out, but if they can fly over it they are easy targets. depressing way to start the thanksgiving holiday - chickenless.

    flock missing - no signs!

it seems unlike a hawk or coyote to take all three chickens at one time. the pair of coyotes in our woods is the mating pair for the area and defend their territory from other coyotes so im pretty sure it would have had to have been the two of them, no others. there is a red tailed hawk in the...

    flock missing - no signs!

Quote: that was kind of my feeling. sometimes my dog chases them around the yard, never very aggressively but i think he likes how they cluck and fly around - and being able to fly, they have no trouble avoiding him. so they should be able to dodge a coyote as well, right?? how far will a...

    flock missing - no signs!

i did check the trees and the entire inner and outer perimeter of the fence, calling for them as i always do in the morning and evenings when i visit with them. they ALWAYS respond to it because i use the same tone and i think they recognize it. this morning, there was NOTHING. not a trace...

    flock missing - no signs!

so i came home from work last night around 6:30 and my three hens were missing! i let them free range in the daytime and usually leave the light on in their coop since it is typically dark by the time i get home, at which point i turn the light off for them. they have been free ranging for 6...

new coop from an unused doghouse!

they are full sized chickens - one buff orp, one plymouth barred rock, one RIR and one ameraucana. the dog house has a nice slated wood floor right now. there is a large dog door on one side, but no other openings right now. i was thinking of putting the nesting boxes (is 2 enough?) on the...

new coop from an unused doghouse!

i live in new england, so it's in in mid-70s these days, gets up to 90s in the summer, and down to low 30s, sometimes 20s in the winter. i'm near the water and in southern NE, though, so the winter's are a little more mild than, say, new hampshire or maine.

    how old before treats?

my chicks are a week old now, and i have some weeds, spinach and arugula that bolted, and kitchen scraps ready for the compost pile that i'd like to give them. i was also thinking about picking up some meal worms for them! is a week old too young to feed them this stuff? they DEVOUR their...

new coop from an unused doghouse!

hey y'all! i'm a newbie here, and a newbie to raising chickens. i ordered 4 chicks from our local feed store and they arrived a week ago! but we don't have a coop for them yet.... so dh and i built a sweet little doghouse a couple months ago that our coonhound shows no interest in. this...

    Saying Hi

i'm also a newbie! my four chicks arrived one week ago today and have made a home out of our downstairs bathtub :-) and our coonhound has taken a keen interest in them... he greets them every morning with a roo and an inquisitive peek into their brooder. hopefully he stops drooling and...
