I bought an egg candling light from Amazon called "MagicFly Egg Candler" that works great! It is a "cool" led light, that comes with rubber cups of different sizes for different eggs, that plugs into any outlet. If I remember correctly, it cost around $20.
Once you get to day 18, a friend...
Yes, they made it safe and sound. I apologize for not posting sooner, but I've been right out straight today! So, I arrived at my local post office at 0545, no one was there yet. The clerk arrived about 0555, and the truck got there at 6. I asked the driver, who I had known from when I...
So, this isn't about the Hatchery Surprise...but it IS similar. We ordered the Waterfowl special (hatchery choice, 4 goslings and 6 ducklings), and I have been tracking the shipment utilizing the track-a-package feature of the USPS website and also signed up for text alerts for all activity...
I can confirm that they do not automatically vaccinate for Mareks with the hatchery surprise...you must ASK for it. It is the same price $10 for the first 66 birds, but they ONLY VACCINATE CHICKS. If you get other types of birds (turkey, duck, goose, guinea, etc.) they are NOT vaccinated. I...
Soo....we got our shipment in. No DOA, there were about 51 chicks, no geese like we had requested, but it IS hatchery choice with no guarantee other than at least 40 live chicks. I had to cull one who could not stand because of a deformity and was being trampled by everyone. I tried, though, by...
I awoke to good news! I had two text messages from USPS (I signed up for text alerts at USPS track and confirm web page) that said arrived at HAMPDEN ME and departed there! Hampden is our closest postal processing facility, so I expect a call from the post office soon!
Today, they were on day 10. There were a few with dark yolks, and some that just looked clear. None of them had developed the blastocyte (dot with veins spidering outwards). I now have 12 turkey eggs in the incubator, 5 Bronze and 7 Red Bourbon.
Well, as much as pains me to say this, I'm calling it. None of my eggs have developed. They have all lost a little bit of weight, but upon candling, there is no development. I'm not sure if I messed up somewhere, or if it was how they were stored before I got them...who knows.
I'm not...
Question for those experienced individuals: Am I supposed to do the daily cooling and misting from day 1 (24 hrs after setting), or wait until first candling at 7 days? I weighed the eggs tiday and all have lost weight, somw more than others.
Thank you for the advice, psue! I feel more relieved that I'm doing this right. Do you still do the daily 15 min cool down and mist as has been previously discussed in Pete's thread?
So...as I have previously stated, I read the sticky thread that Pete did on incubating goose eggs. I, like many before me, have a few questions.
First off, the breed of these eggs are thought to be Dewlap African. I am confused about the humidity and temperature levels for incubating in the...
Good Monday morning to you all! I have an LG 9300 incubator that I rigged with an old computer fan over the heating element to convert it to forced air. I have read Pete's completed guide to incubating geese, and will be referring to his OP regularly throughout the process. There are...
If you have ever seen the show, "My cat from hell" with Jackson Galaxy...I think this coop would be considered "chickenification". Absolutely stupendous job
We have ordered a hatchery surprise, shipping on April 8th. We asked for geese. It hd as been a tough winter, lost half our flock due to predators and a couple who I found just outside the coop door in the chicken run after the blizzard. Will keep you posted when it comes and yes, I will take...
UPDATE: Thinking I had all jennys, I traded my gray jenny with a friends bourbon red and bought a blue slate tom off of her to add to my flock. Well, as soon as I put Blue in to the area, my Narragansett puffed himself up! So, I guess he's "Norman" not "Nancy"! LOL
We have 3 turkeys, all heritage breeds, that were 7 weeks old when we got them from a lady who had an ad in Uncle Henry's (swap/sale publication). I was thinking up to this point that the two darker ones were jakes, and the buff was a jenny. However, I have read in a couple different places that...
Here is the reply we got about seeing if we could nurse the duckling and let it live...
The legs will slowly not have circulation and cause all kinds of problems. The animal kingdom is cruel and survival of the fittest is nature’s way of letting the best survive. My opinion right or wrong would...
I got an email from Jeff at Cackle, and he said "
Hi and thanks for the contact. OH my yes, that is a severe deformity . I am very sorry this made it pass our pulling crew and shipping crew and to you. This is a rare occurrence with this type of deformity in ducks. The breed is Rouen duck. I...
