My pretty Isabella Brahma girl finally laid her first egg! She's a big girl, and her comb's been red for a few weeks, so I've been waiting for it.
I went to collect the Marans eggs this afternoon, and spotted her sitting on a nest for the very first time. I thought it might be a practice sit...
Original thread is here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/716666/wyandottes-french-wheaten-marans-partridge-and-buff-brahmas Eight weeks now, and we culled the five boyiest boys, which did all turn out to be boys. I've got a new set of photos up at my flickr account (for some reason BYC isn't...
I know it's too early for some of these, and I don't have photos of all of them... but there are several I'm pretty sure are little cockerels. I have fifteen babies, five weeks old this week. We only need four or five pullets (we just had a ridiculously successful hatch). They're a mix of French...
I have three-week-old chicks in a wire-bottomed hutch, in a chookshed with pine shavings on the floor. The chicks are on ampro-medicated starter feed. Can I still use the sweepings from the chookshed on the vegie garden?
Hi! It's spring, so it's egg time. I'm a sophomore egg incubate-r, and this second batch of eggs seem to be going better than I expected at the moment.
My first hatch was non-shipped eggs and 11 of 12 hatched. I got shipped eggs this time, overnight Express Post by truck from 2-3 hours away...
Well, the babies (Australorps and Barnevelders) are near on six weeks old now.
They've as of this weekend got a couple of wee doors in their hutch so that they can mix with the hens in the shed (but the hens can't get into the hutch, to eat their medicated starter feed, or to corner and...
I've been putting apple cider vinegar in the water up till now, mostly to reduce algal growth, but thinking about putting garlic in there. Do people use one or the other? Is there an advantage to using both?
If you use garlic, how do you manage it? Skin on or skin off? Left in how long?
I woke up this morning to a sick baby Barnevelder. They are three weeks old yesterday, hatched by me, fantastic hatch rate, and up till now vigorous and well. Just starting to put on shoulder feathers.
They were without food for no more than about eight hours overnight (probably quite a bit...
My nearly three week old babies (Barnevelders and Australorps) haven't had anything to eat except starter crumble and a little bit of boiled egg yolk and yoghurt. When can I start them on greens, and how? I tossed in a weed or two, but they weren't interested. Do I need to mince up the greens...
