    What breed is this?

The hen who was laying is dead. She was lethargic last night. It looked like she was egg bound. I put her in a warm water bath with epsom salts and massaged her abdomen and she seemed to be more alert so I dried her off and put her in a quiet space for a couple of hours. Went to put her in...

    What breed is this?

It's possible but both holes are at chicken head level and one has chips pointing out like it was pecked from the inside. Years ago when we had rats, they all burrowed under the run. No one ever bothered to chew holes, especially that small. I'll keep an eye out though and keep the traps...

    What breed is this?

Thank you. I need to do some research and find out more about them. They did something disturbing this last week. I went to feed them and found two holes, one in the door to the run and another in the wall of the enclosure. It was clear that they had been pecked out from the inside. I put...

In over my head- bought chickens from production farm

I would remove her, put her in a quiet spot in your basement and make sure she has easy access to food and water. She may be egg bound. If it seems like she's straining to lay, you can put her in a warm water bath and see if that helps stimulate the process. There are many other suggestions...

    What breed is this?

They just went in for the night so she wasn't very happy about the pic. They are little. Little birds, little eggs.

    What breed is this?

I bought six pullets from Tractor Supply. They look like RIRs but smaller and have started laying half size eggs at three and a half months. There have been three of these eggs in the last week. I have never seen this before (the occasional tiny egg but not consistently) and they are so very...

Vet amputating toe tomorrow. Advice on recovery?

The toe started out deformed and has pretty much turned into a pretzel. She is thirteen weeks old and we were about to put her group outside in their own coop but she is walking on the tip of a bone which is still covered in skin but it will split soon. So the vet is going to amputate it...

Frame to protect gardens from poultry.

I know this isn't a coop but my husband put these together for me so that our poultry can't get into our vegetable gardens. They work beautifully so I thought I'd share. The one in front doesn't have the wire on it but the one in the back does although we won't have the full blown wood panel...

What do you do with extra bulbs or rhizomes?

My flowers are multiplying like crazy. When you thin your flower beds, what do you do with the extras?

    Chickens, now Turkey's really!?!

Don't panic! I did the same thing. The local feed store had four poults that someone had ordered and hadn't claimed so I just took them home. They do need a safe place from predators. When they aren't full grown, they'll need the same amount of protection as chickens. When my first was...

    Deflating the turkey.

I have a blog but haven't published yet. Thanks for the encouragement though! This is the original turkey visit to the vet with Christmas: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/239037/my-day-with-christmas-funny-story Our turkey vet is fabulous! She an avian specialist and apparently has...

Swollen head - ruptured air sac.

Thanks. I should have said that the sac ruptured because our tom gets enthusiastic during mating and stepped on it so this is a result of trauma not a health issue. It's not infected and she's not in any pain. The vet was not concerned and the turkey shows no other symptoms whatsoever...

    Deflating the turkey.

I resubmitted the photos. I think there was something wrong with the first batch. Thanks!

    Deflating the turkey.

I posted the two sentence version of the diagnosis in the Emergencies thread. This is more of a story about turkeys. A quick disclaimer: My birds do not have the avian flu. Not. Not, not, not. You will read about my prediction that they did but all that means is that I'm not a vet. So, let's...

Swollen head - ruptured air sac.

I just took my turkey to the vet and found that her swollen head was the result of a ruptured air sac in her neck. They poked a needle in her and tried to deflate but it filled up again. The vet said it doesn't matter and we should just keep an eye on her.

How do turkeys get along with chickens?

Something that was not mentioned in that thread or that I missed. I do not have roosters so my tom is the head of the entire flock (24 chickens, three turkeys). He is my watch turkey and sounds an alarm whenever a predator is nearby. All of the birds come running and either get into their...

Wanting to get turkeys, but I'm at a toss up.

Another good source of protein is worms. Not smelly, good for the soil and easy to raise.
