Frank's Flock
We decided to get backyard chicks a year before we actually started our build. I grew up on a farm with many animals, but my husband grew up with none. This has been a duel project for us, however I have to start something, see it, and then do it, while my husband needs to have...
I force feed mine for 3 days or so and kept her in the house at night. I slowly started taking her outside and let her hand around the other hens. When she was around the other chickens she perked up quite a bit. I built her a chicken tractor and now have her in there with two other docile...
I can't really help here, but I have a hen who is doing pretty much the same thing. I've also got her inside and have been feeding her aby food (mixed vegetables and brown rice, yummy) with a syringe. She does show some intrest in pecking at her crumble and will stand for short periods...
I have a mixed flock of heavy breads and polish crested that are almost 6 months old. My white/black polish girls have been getting their top knots picked at. I had them separated until they re-feathered and then slowly re-introduced them into the flock. One has done great, but the other one...
Half of my 10 week chicks are roosting on top of the nesting box instead of their roost. The nesting box and roost are on opposite sides of the coop and the nesting box has a sloped front but flat back. Any thoughts?
I've contacted the local paper and two news stations to see if they want to run a piece on the joys of backyard chickens. I'll be inviting the neighborhood association lady over to meet the girls as soon as she returns my call.
Thanks to everybody for your kind works and helpful suggestions.
Got two calls from the chief of police office yesterday. They agreed that I didn't owe any fees and said our license is approved and in the mail. Yeah!
Then today, get a call from the neighborhood association representative saying that someone called in and complained about the smell. I'm...
I ask Larry (for that is the cranky neighbor) if he would like to meet the chicks every time he walks by. He never answer, and quickly walks away. It gives me perverse pleasure.
Thanks for all the responses. Planning on openly taping my conversation with the police licensing people.
I agree that this all likely stems from a neighbor (they won't tell who or even if it's the same one). I wish that the departments within the city could talk to one another or just tell my neighbor that my chickens are within city code.
Luckily I've been documenting names and conversations...
After researching laws and ordinances in the city of Rochester, NY we started talking about getting chickens. Told most of the neighbors, who were super excited. Began building the coop two months prior to getting the chicks. The first complaint started on Day 2 of construction, with a...
Mine get all my vegetable/fruit scraps as well as anything in the garden that's gone to seed. They love lettuce! They also get pasta and egg shells and stale bread. I haven't tried anything meat or dairy related.
Overbought chicks a need to reduce flock size by 9. 4 weeks old, mostly feathered, doing well in outdoor coop. Mixed breeds but all egg layers. Came from mcmurray and were vaccinated for coccidio and maerks. New hamp reds, black and buff orphinton, polish crested, rocks, etc. Prefer to send...
