I noticed this on a hen, this morning. She was walking a little funny, with her tail feathers pointing down. I thought maybe a stuck egg and gave her a bath. She doesn't have a stuck egg, but has this on one of her feet. Any ideas? Thank you

I have a 2 year old flock of 6 chickens that I'm trying to introduce 3 13 week old "babies" to. I had the babies in the yard, next to the coop so everyone could see each other for about a week. Then I started letting everyone in the yard, including the babies, during the day, for a week. At...
My chickens will be a year old, this week. I have been getting eggs almost daily, from all of them, this winter. For the last week eggs have been the range of 2-5 per day vs. 4-6 and today there were zero. I have also started to notice feathers in their hen house, not tons, but a lot where...

LOL, it never occured to me to try and blow her dry. I would guess it would be a lot like trying to blow-dry a cat!
Thank you, for the helpful information. I think I will wait and bathe her on Sunday, when both my husband and my 4 year old are out fishing. I think my husband would...
One of my Rocks has a lot of poo, in the feathers around her vent. Should I try to bathe her or trim off the feathers, with the poo on them? If bathing is the best answer, how does one bath a chicken? Thank you

I had checked for eggs just prior to Mirabelle sitting on her nest so I know it is her egg. She came from McMurray hatchery, which I believe is a good hatchery.
I will post pictures of her and the eggs later on this evening (my hsuband has our camera, now).
I have 6 hens, as of yesterday 4 are now laying. Yesterday, while I was out, a VERY light brown/cream colored egg appeared. I assumed it was from our Black Australorp, but I was wrong. Today I went out to check for eggs and our Americana was on her nest. When she left the hen house I went...
What I know about roosters can be written on the back of a stamp, but I remember reading somewhere that if you keep your roosters in a cage that isn't tall enough for them to stand and stretch they won't crow. I don't know how much truth there is to that, but it might be worth a try.
How do you size the eggs? Is there a tool or scale you buy? Or do you just go with what the breed standard is (ie, if a breed is supposed to lay medium sized eggs then go with it being a medium size egg)?
Your Americana's are beautiful. Mirabelle, our Americana is very gold and brown. I will try ot find a picture of her and post it, for you! How old are your Americana's? Mine is 19 weeks and she is very quiet, so far!
My son, age 4, is out talking to her now. He wants her to lay an egg...

The chirping and singing doesn't bother me, it is the squawking, in the early morning that has me concerned, as I have neighbor(4 houses) against and next to my backyard. I don't want them to hear and complain...And until yesterday the only thing I could offer as a peace offering was...
I have the hulls in the nesting boxes, too. The girls don't seem to mind, but they have only just started to lay (first egg yesterday). At our store the bag of hulls is about $3 more than a bag of shavings, but it lasts longer, as you scoop the poo out. I scoop every few days, but you will...
