Hi, we didnt get any high stepping from the birds, just weakness. I took another from her more recently that was terribly weak but on closer inspection she had severe lice, i treated all the chickens, hers and mine and we have had no further problems.
I do believe gloria had coccidiosis...
Hi horseshoe13,
Im sorry but i have no experience with that. There is a list of possible causes here though: https://poultrykeeper.com/respiratory-problems/respiratory-disease-in-chickens/.
Fingers crossed for your new babies.
Gloria died last week, i didnt do a post mortem as the kids...
Lets hope it isnt Mareks then . I treated her for mites yesterday with some spot on ivermectin. We havent seen any mites but it seemed a good idea to treat her anyway just in case. She cooed at me yesterday too thats the first sound she has made since I brought her home.
Quick update: she is still improving slowly. She stands for longer periods now and is starting to have better control of her neck. I definitly feel that she is over the worst.
How can i tell if she is dehydrated? She eats a lot but drinks hardly anything. The food i am giving her is very sloppy as it contains yoghurt and purreed fruit as well as liquid vitamins would this contain enough liquid though?
Im not going to pay for the mareks test so i guess we will see how it turns out. My other birds are not at risk as they havent been exposed to gloria. Rudi's have been although her current birds are all established and well. Its true her tail is flopped and she still cannot walk but i do...
I would completely agree its very important that they develop a strong immune system but at this stage she is too weak to be exposed to anything new so antibiotics would make the difference between life and death in this case. However there is no sign at the moment of anything other than slow...
I am keeping her inside so warmth is not a problem. I have noticed she is maintaining her body warmth now whereas before she felt chilled.
She lost her ability to walk the day after I rescued her, it was quick and I hadnt been able to get the extra vitmins and probiotics into her at that...
She is definitely on the road to recovery, she managed to stay upright without drooping her head for a good 10 mins yesterday and she trying to move about more. She is eating well and her colour is better. I am hoping that the scarring to her intestines isnt so bad that she cant fully recover.
You have helped, thank you so much much! Here are the results for the sample I sent:
Basically its definetly cocci. This means that the amprol doesnt work!!! I'm just about to google baycox!
I am so pleased that I have a diagnosis.
I didnt realise that the apple cider prevents cocci, I will tell rudi to put it in the water, mine get it in their food but only a couple of table spoonfuls between them twice a week; I am wondering if its better in the water and how much should they have?
Can you feed them fresh garlic...
I have looked at the symptoms of botulism but to be honest I had discounted it as none of the other symptoms are there, she doesnt have diahorria and her poo isnt green or yellow and her feathers are not loose. I would agree with the general weakness of her legs and neck but her wings arent...
Thank you @rebrascora for the sling idea and i will try that when she is a little stronger, she likes to be held that way but at the moment doesnt have the strength or coordination in her neck to control her head movements very well. I notice this morning that she is trying to stand and...
well, the pooh is in the post!
I was worried about her last night, for the first time she wasnt interested in the food and kept falling asleep in my arms. I really thought she would be gone when I checked on her this morning but she is still holding on.
She has eaten two egg cups of...
