It's a week since I took the eggs away and my hen still isn't laying. She stopped her broody behaviour a few hours after I took the eggs. When is she likely to start again?
Thanks she is out of the nest now, I couldn't convince her off of her empty nest. But now she is out cuddles up with the cockerel. I think I will wait until the weather is warmer next time and just enjoy eating her eggs when she starts laying again
I candled them all today and there was nothing so I cracked them all and there was no development in any of them. Most of them didn't have an obvious bullseye so I don't know if the cockerel isn't doing his job, I will wait now until she starts laying and then check those eggs to see if they are...
Another egg was out of the nest this morning and cold so I candled it and the air sac seemed to move slightly from side to side but was mostly still. When I crack it, it looked like this:
There is membrane all round the inside of the shell then this flap what is that?
I have and I can't really see anything in them, but it's my first time so I don't know if I'm missing something. I am going to wait until day 14 and then candle again as surely it should be pretty obvious by then when I candle
Just to update, she kicked 2 more out of the the nest today so I cracked those and there was no sign of development af all, that's 3 now so I suspect the rest are the same or could she be kicking them out because she knows they are no good?
Thank you, I didn't chose that many eggs that was how many she had when she stopped laying. Maybe next time I will make it less. And I will leave them longer, they all look fine at the moment none smell bad x
It's the light on my iPhone the torch I have doesn't give me as good a view. I will wait a few more days.
I feel so bad for her she seems to be so dedicated and for her to have nothing at the end lol
From the day she stopped laying makes it day 10 now, I should really be able to see something in the eggs now shouldn't I? I can see a dark shadow but I think that may be the yolk, i can't see any veins.
Do you think I should wait until day 14 or get rid of the Ines she has now and let her lay...
So if I take her eggs and then collect around 8 then put them back after storing as you suggest, I can give them back for her to sit on.
Will she take a while to start laying again? She is my only hen, we have a cockerel and a male and female duck
No she stopped laying when she got to 11, makes a funny noise when you are near and only comes out twice a day for a few minutes. When she is out she does a poo like a massive one and eats and drinks then goes straight back it.
My bantam started laying just after Xmas she was born at the end Of June. I decided to let her sit on her eggs, she layed 11 and started sitting 10 days ago. I candled them and can't really tell if I am seeing the yolk or something in there, but figure it's likely to be pretty obvious by now...
