Though starting on this chicken adventure was solely the DH's idea, he will not want to have to build another enclosure. I have tried bringing that topic up before. Lol! With the new additions, we only have 6 hens and that probably wouldn't be enough for Runt. In that group, I also have yet...
Thank you, again, for the advice! I went back out to check on the chickens after the switch tango with Winston and he went straight back under the coop. That is positive and fantastic! I will talk to the DH about trying to find a way to separate Winston and in order to see how Runt does and we...
This is becoming more clear to me. Is there a way to know if Runt would make a good rooster from your experience? He has never crowed and I have never seen him dance for the ladies. He just runs around constantly trying to stay out of Winston way and is always the last to eat. I try to give him...
Well, I took a switch out to the run with me after reading BeeKissed's advice. He came at me, I stood tall and smacked the ground. He jumped and RAN right under the coop. He came out from under the coop and I just walked toward him and right back under the coop he went. Didn't have to tap him or...
Thank you so much, bobbi-j, for all of your wonderful information! Being new to chickens certainly does have a learning curve and I am learning so much from everyone here. I know that I need to be better about farm life and I am trying. Lazy gardener provided me with Beekist's article and, after...
I did think about that this morning. My other rooster, Runt, is sweet but, since he is at the bottom of the pecking order, very skiddish. If Beekist's amazing advice doesn't work on Winston then I will give the DH the task of dealing with him and impart the training on Runt.
So, I have been trying to research how to provide places to hide and I have read to give them spaces "with 2 sides but not where they could be cornered". My little brain can't figure out how that works... 2 sides would equate to something like a hallway or alcove which wouldn't provide much...
The hubby would gladly do it if I allowed him. He really likes Winston though and that is why he suggested just letting nature take its course and putting him out to free range alone. Maybe he doesn't want to be the one to hurt his boy.
Yep. That is me! I am a total fail. The hubby tells me I will never cut it as a country girl. There isn't a single animal that I wouldn't try to save or make my pet. He wants to raise some animals for food and I just want to bury myself in the closet and starve. I got him to let me keep the 2...
We currently have 9 hens and 2 roosters. We had started out with more but I totally suck at buying sexed chicks and seem to come out top heavy with roosters. We gave several away but had wanted to keep my 2 favorite boys. So I went and got more sexed chicks after the discovery of so many...
Thank you!
I do love my SS hens. They are so sweet.
Our hens are usually very social and when we sit in the run they will come sit in our laps or on our shoulders. One of our RIR and EE hens insist on always being on our shoulders while doing chores. We are always very cautious about our eyes...
We do have another rooster in the flock. He is a BLRW. We could try to find a way to separate our SS rooster entirely for now but, if he calms down, would we have to reintroduce him back into the flock?
I couldn't imagine eating our Winston and I don't have the heart to let the hubby cull him so...
Thank you. I am learning that pretty quickly. I read to hold chicks all of the time from day one and that is what we had done. This is our first time with chickens. Didn't have a problem until now.
So, my head rooster recently flogged me. He is a 21 week Speckled Sussex. He had been showing dominance toward the DH and my 16yo son for a few days but never me. I picked him up and carried him around as recommended. Well, after about 5 minutes of cleaning with him in my arms, he whipped his...
