I think having a screen or hardware cloth door is a great idea, but I wouldn't lose the solid door for nighttime predator protection or storms. I'd just add an additional door.

That's a pretty good description missy. Without seeing it, I would put a big window or two on the east wall. That way you'll catch the morning sun to extend the day length for them (egg production).
Chickens are outside during the day so any other direction won't add light or increase day...
I've always argued against facing it south. I don't for the life of me know why people suggest that.
I guess it depends on where one lives.
South facing windows do no good unless the chickens never come outside.
East facing windows catch the morning sun. South facing windows have no effect...
