OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Thanks, WV :hugs Hi Annanicole18 :frow I'm sorry I didn't get a notification of your post Sunday but we may have got you covered if you're the same annanicole who I shipped Calicos (from eBay) to this morning! :D

Always good to find a well recommended source! Sounds like you should have a nice group of bantams :)

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I have 4 bantam Cochin roosters :) (and 5 large fowl roosters lol) all our roosters are very nice and kid safe too. But keep in mind I don't have hatchery birds and I put a lot of emphasis on breeding and selecting for good personalities. I'm not sure if your new birds are coming from a hatchery...

:frow Welcome! We're nearby in the Laurelville area! Sounds like a smart bunch of hens you have. I've been thinking about getting some Amberlink chicks to add to our layer group so I'm glad to hear yours are so friendly and sociable :)

:frow Hi neighbor! We are very close to Tarlton as well! Most Ohio egg laws are geared toward larger operations. If you have fewer than 500 hens annually you are not considered a "producer". The vast majority of back yard owners will be exempt from much of the red tape involving table egg sales...

We will be there too! :-) I agree with minihorse on many points there and wanted to also add that hatcheries have to meet demands for numbers of birds produced so they aren't breeding to SOP (standard of perfection)/ APA or ABA standards like show breeders are. My experience with hatchery...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Glad I could help :-) Most all the time during daylight hours, my chicken doors are open-rain, shine, snow or cold. The only times that we have closed them in longer periods were the extreme cold days when temps were below zero or when we had like -15 with wind chill. I always opened the chicken...

For water in the large fowl coops that only have adult birds in them, we use heated dog bowls which work great! You can leave them outside in the run as well. For the bantams and young chicks and juveniles we set their waterers on homemade cookie tin heaters that have 40 watt appliance bulbs in...

:frow Welcome to byc! We are only about 15 minutes from Circleville

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

We have our runs fully enclosed- the tops are just chicken wire and work great to keep hawks and owls out. Most of the snow drops right through. You might see a little collect on the wire but not enough to make it sag. Depending on the dimensions of your run, you might need cross supports...

That's normal for them to stay the same. If you don't get a chance to splint the toes in the first day of life or so, they'll stay like that. The good news is that most (my hen included) can get around well and do just fine. Mine has some really bad toes but still can roost, scratch, and go up...

That's a good point. These cockerels are out of a Splash Birchen Marans so I'm also interested to see what type of contribution they will make to egg color when bred with light brown laying hens. I haven't test hatched any from them yet, but I think I'll give some to the next one that goes broody.

It sounds like your cockerel was a very nice bird! Knowing where he came from would have convinced me to give him a try in the breeding pen too! I had a couple chicks hatch in April who were malpositioned and took awhile to hatch that ended up with a middle toe crooked. That sure sounds...

Like OHFarmerswife said, yes it can be a genetic issue but there can be other causes of it too that may not mean your hen has a genetic defect. Incorrect temperature during incubation (if she wasn't hatched under a broody) is a common cause. I've also read that riboflavin deficiencies in the...

Thank you!! You may have already seen my post to you in the turkey thread, but she's wandered off to the neighbors'. We are keeping an eye out for her and if she comes back we'll try to catch her and keep her quarantined as we try to see who she belongs to. I'll definitely send you a pm in the...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I posted the pics in the turkey forum here on byc and it sounds like this is a hen although I don't see her anywhere now. Sounds like a happy ending for your lucky little hen :-) Teal eggs! I bet they''re gorgeous! We have quite a few rescued animals and hard luck cases here although they...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

No I don't yet, and I'm as big an animal lover as you'll ever find, but my first priority is the health of my flock. I don't know what diseases or parasites this turkey might have and so I really don't want it near my other birds right now. I have 24 babies and my Marans breeding flock in the...

Anyone lose a turkey lol? This one showed up in my yard this morning and it seems to be in rough shape. It's driving my flock batty roosting on top of my coop and run. Anyone know is this is a hen or young tom? Breed? I have zero experience with turkeys other than eating them on Thanksgiving

The ones I use are from Premier 1 supplies. They're awesome! Basically, they have a heated surface on the underside and have an internal thermostat and maintain a steady temp. You don't have to do anything other than raise the legs as the chicks grow! The chicks go under and come out as they...
