So sorry about your loss. I have been fortunate enough to get neighbors who do not like dogs and somehow don't mind roosters crowing at 5am. I do hush them with lots of free eggs, however. Maybe next time you talk to your neighbor, you could offer to share some eggs once you get your new...

I covered mine with bird netting/fruit tree netting, but I lock my girls up at night. The netting works well for daytime predators, but probably not so much for raccoons.

No idea. I was wondering this myself. Hopefully no one travels too far with birds in tow.

You in the market for 30 Silkie chicks? I had hoped to sell them at the Chillicothe swap in 3 days. But I agree, better safe than sorry.

x2 I assumed the window was already covered in hardware cloth and that they wanted to cover it further to keep out snow..

I have found that window screen is pretty effective at keeping out snow while still allowing for ventilation.

Absolutely, though eggs may be a problem atm. I squeezed about 60 eggs out of my girls this spring, popped them into the incubator, and the girls decided enough was enough and went broody...ALL of them at once...in one nestbox. lol What do you have for trade?

I've a brooder full of chicklets (mostly silkies) that I am growing out for the Chillicothe swap. The second incubator is still full. I'll surely have some extras if anyone is interested. ETA: There's a lot of paint genetics mixed up in this bunch.

They look like they're getting ready. I love Australorps, lovely birds.

Oh my! Do yourself a favor and get those guys outside. As long as there's enough of them for huddling, they''ll do fine. My birds are out at 5-6 weeks, WITHOUT heat lamps. My 3 week olds spent about 6 hours out in the run today.

Hens will continue to produce eggs for a lot longer than a couple of years. How many and for how long depends on the breed and the individual hen. A lot of people choose to cull or sell their birds once production starts to go down at about 2-3 years, once the feed bill becomes too high to...

Yeah, I spent all day walking around and didn't get anything that I needed either. There were tons of empty vendors spaces. I don't know if people stayed home because they thought things might be too sloppy from all of the rain or if they just didn't do well last fall, but it was definitely a...

Thank you. I will definitely shoot her a message. And even if she doesn't have what I am looking for, I'm always looking for like-minded chicken folk in our area.

I've only ever seen chicks. And I did not check the pricing because I could not be trusted to not buy some.

I've shown the birds in my paint pen, they did quite well. But the rooster (paint) has developed somewhat unsightly leakage in his hackles since his last showing (which was as a pullet, interestingly enough). I had hoped to fix that, but have had a lot of trouble sourcing quality paints locally.

That sounds great. I've been getting away from the idea of keeping all of my colors separate myself. I find the thought of surprise colors somewhat intriguing. Some of the most beautiful silkies I have seen were not of recognized color.

Not if I get there first. :P I actually have a paint roo over black hens atm, but no eggs yet this year. My girls are getting older. I will definitely keep you in mind.
