OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

True, most of us who are lucky enough to live outside city limits would prefer you don't relocate pests or pets to our neck of the woods. :D But if you trap it and you know someone outside city limits, ask them if you can come over put down the opossum. Or if you have a barrel or something you...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Well, of the 12 Buckeye chicks we got this spring, 2 died early in the brooder and 7 of the remaining 10 turned out to be roosters. :he So, sent two of them to freezer camp this past weekend. Going to send four more to freezer camp this weekend. And, will keep one. Friend of mine showed me a...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

@SRHartley, we finally got a spot set up outside this weekend and moved the Buckeyes we got from you out of the brooder. Took them a while for them to decide the grass wasn't a bad thing. There was lots running amok and chest bumping as they explored their new space. So far, everyone is still...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Yep. Back before we got our first batch of RIR, when I was doing all the reading and research, I kept running across references to the Buckeye breed. It was like someone out there was telling me that those are what I needed to get. They sounded just like what I was looking for; a dual purpose...

This year's first brooder. One of the kids' dresser that got turned on its side and a lid added. It is maybe 2-1/2'x4. We took the drawers out. Then reinforced the bottom and laid down a piece of linoleum. They were in that maybe three weeks before it started getting a bit crowded. Couldn't keep...

Yep. :( Other than the one slow one left, the rest are looking good. All bright-eyed, clean and fuzzy, eating, drinking, running around, and sleeping. Edit to add... How'd you get my name to show up as a link like that?

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Came home from work today and found what you never want to find in your brooder. One of the chicks had died. All of the chicks are up and around, eating, drinking, sleeping, etc. Had been keeping an eye on this one and one other as they were/are a bit more sluggish than the rest but still up and...

Yep. That was the original plan. Get six new pullets each spring. Then, in the fall of the third year, cull the oldest batch. Keeps the production up and keeps the flock at a manageable size.

I'll see if I can get some good pics of them this weekend. Hopefully they'll be at least a 50/50 mix of male/female. Would like to add a half dozen new pullets this year. Our original three are turning 2 in a month or two. Might send them to the freezer this fall rather than feeding them...

Picked up a dozen Buckeye chicks from SRHartley on Tuesday. They are in the brooder and doing well so far. Almost forgot how quick little chicks switch from on to off.

If your purse is anything like my wife's... probably quite a few. But then he'd notice the mountain of stuff you dumped out of your purse to make room for eggs and the jig would be up. ;)

Oh joy, there is white stuff on the ground again. The girls are going to be so "thrilled". One of them is probably hating life right about now. She started a hard molt last week and has a large patch of missing feathers on her back missing as well as lots of smaller patches on her...

You may have used the hand sanitizer before handling them but that is just one small part of it. In theory, the employees have been at least familiarized with how to properly handle the chicks so (as mentioned) they aren't hurt, dropped, etc. They also know to put the chick back in the proper...

I was in 4-H as a kid. Showed beef cattle. Contact the Extension Office for your county. They can give you more info and hook you up with a local club. The club should teach him what he needs to know and what to expect.

The ladies are NOT happy. The white stuff is back. When I opened the coop this morning a couple of them actually made it a few steps down the ramp before they realized there was snow in their run. They stopped, looked around in disgust, shot me a quick glare, and promptly turned around and...

You guys are a whole lot nicer than I am. ANY dog that comes onto our property and harasses livestock (chicken, cow, horse, sheep, etc) would quickly be put down. Livestock is livestock. Grew up raising beef cattle. I've seen the damage that pet dogs that "just want to play" can do. I've also...
