Lyddz, My golden comets came from Tractor supply last year. They were some my Daughter-in-law bought and were all pullets. Some of them made it into my flock and she still has some but she butchered most of them. TSC will soon have chicks in store in many locations. When they do ask them for...

A breed you might consider for huge brown eggs are Golden Comets. I've a few of those myself, they wintered good, and lay almost every day. your dad gets a taste of them, he'll not go back to Wally World for eggs again. DW loves them. I like the Easter Eggers medium size eggs myself.

Quote: If you're really just starting out and would like to know the title of a good book about the addiction look for: "Storey's Guide to RAISING CHICKENS". In it there is a guide of the most common chicken breeds and the climate they are best adapted to, etc. You might even find it used on...

Quote: Any of the breeds with large single combs will probably have their combs frost bitten in the winter. So, Buckeyes, Wyandottes, EEs, to name a few are all hardy but those you mentioned would also probably do alright as well, just might get their combs frosted.

Quote: I also just have 4 EEs two of which do lay a rather blue egg. I bought them from Mt. Healthy hatchery. They sell them as Araucanas-Ameraucanas but add that they are commonly called Easter Eggers, because they lack the pureness required to call them anything else, in other word they are...

Quote: Dumb question here...could you tell me what are Easter Eggers? Are they Americaunas? I have 4 that lay blue/green eggs and, well, I guess I don't know what they are! There are actually a couple threads that talk about that - but the previous post is true - lovely mutts that lay...

Quote: I've no experience with these, but any true Buckeye would surely want some. Note: I'm not a native born Ohioan. My favorite right now are Easter Eggers. http://www.meyerhatchery.com/productinfo.a5w?session.category=Chickens&grd_prodone_filter=PRODUCT_ID%20%3d%20%27BKES%27

Quote: I found that true with the ones I had as well. They are friendly to the owner though, I think that is what Inkheart meant. I sold all the ones I had as the Golden Comets were laying so much better. The BA's are reported to be one of the best layers there is. The thing is, if you want to...

Quote: Welcome, I live in southern Ohio, but have not been on the forum very long to know about any up-coming shows. I was thinking about asking the same thing, for chickens anyway.

8 degrees below this AM. That was @ 7:30. I went out to check my girls and collect any eggs before they could freeze on me. The waterer is frozen solid. Guess the heater isn't doing it's job. I plugged in a heat lamp to see if I can thaw it out, but will be taking a back up waterer out in just a...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

We had a bout 4" @ my home in Ross County. If it had not been a rather wet snow, it would have been maybe 6". If it hadn't been wet and the wind had blown, we would have had about 24" drifts in our driveway. The little that did come after it got colder did drift enough so the belly of the van...

Quote: Yes, I open their door every day. It is a very tight coop and the little door lets in needed air circulation for them. The cold gets in too but you don't want condensation forming in the coop. Mine don't seem to be bothered by the cold that much, they fluff up and just keep going. I...

My pig has a heated water bowl, some kind of dog dish looking thing my wife got for her. Now she wants to buy a harness so she can put her on a leash. One spoiled pig. The chickens have a nice tight coop to live in. They do not like snow. I go out and open the door to their run and if there is...
