Also... unless you already eat 2-3 eggs every single day or have a good plan for how you're going to use them, their laying rate is really not hugely important. My girls are giving me a dozen a week and we're always struggling to keep up!
Since their laying starts to taper off after just 2 years...
Out of the cold hardy ones, I've heard repeatedly that buff orpington's and barred rocks are the sweetest. I also have 3, having lost a sweet buckeye to a hawk early on :(
I've got a light brown leghorn, an Easter egger, and what's supposed to be an olive egger but she lays white eggs. Be...
My birds are a light brown leghorn, an Easter egger and an olive egger. But for some reason my eggs are white, brown and blue. Fine by me. 3 birds who always lay in their nesting boxes.
Yesterday, 3 birds FOUR eggs. 3 of the 4 eggs were white. 2 of them were laid outside and were not right. So...
How many are you talking? I only have 3 which will become 6 in the spring. Their pen is located next to my back deck (so a corner of the pen touches a corner of my house). No problems with smell so far but we'll see how that goes when I start deep littering over the winter. I would love to set...
We've got their coop in a 12 x 15 dog area. Fence is only 5 ft high. For lack of building skills we just used a fence hole digger to put up taller posts at all 4 corners and then draped the netting over that. Not top notch but it has already stopped one more hawk attack!
Oh honey, I'm so sorry. I was just there myself :(
I'm sorry honey. I feel for you. Was just there myself :(
We got 15 x 45 poultry netting to cover their area. Couldn't stand to lose another.
Hey! Are you looking to sell any pullets come spring? I'm in Concord and lost one to a hawk and need 3 to replace her. You know, chicken math. I'd rather not mail order if I don't have to.
Missing chicken when I got home from work this afternoon. Just gone without a trace. They are only 6 week old pullets whose coop is in a topless 12 x 15 fenced area.
It's been raining most of the day and they could come and go from the coop. Lots of stuff to hide under. I would think there'd be...
So sorry, Kcc! Sounds like a rough time! The undeveloped eggs are still there?? Unfortunately, this is sounding a little predator-y. If you google missing eggs, it's a common problem. Sometimes hens hide them elsewhere themselves, other times they're being eaten whole by something (snakes or...
I'm with you on the lack of skills/time. We're painting ours with a weatherseal and drilling a small hole just under the top peak to cut down on moisture accumulation (frost bite sucks). Those are the only changes we're making to the coop itself. Outside we will surround it with the straw bales...
Someone could have told me it's OBVIOUS when they cold lol! Poor babies were peeping like crazy and I couldn't figure out why. They have NOT liked to be held but when I put one in my lap and she tries to bury herself under my arm I figured it out. The other 3 attacked me in a cuddle fest and...
My first flock of 4 chickies is 3 weeks old today. Also today thanks to the holiday, they spent the majority of the day outside for the first time (2 other short stays out before). Their brooder box is in the house. I've been terrified they won't acclimate to the weather before our nasty NE Ohio...
