They are very low maintenance. I have a bunch in a shoebox sized plastic tub with holes on top. I remember to feed them every few months and they are still alive. There are some really cool setups with mealworm farming. We just aren't that dedicated. We got the live ones from pet smart.
Congrats on your first egg! Do you have plastic eggs or golf balls in your nest? Sometimes young chickens need hints as to where to lay. Make sure your box is private enough. I put curtains up (stapled old dishtowels up). Most chickens figure it out, but some don't. My year old Buff Orp drops...
Gosh I would love to, but our schedule is insane. We can't even schedule vacation because of baseball. But DS loves it, so we are along for the ride! Economy does have a decent swap, but if you are wanting covered dish, someone's home might be best.
More chicken drama!
I went home on my lunch break today, and found a dead chicken. My 15 mo old EE was lying under the coop. There no signs of predators and no mites around her vent. DS let them out this morning, and I don't know how observant he was. I put them up last night, and didn't...
@PapaChaz don't write off the leghorn yet. My exchequer has a huge comb and wattles. She also has long tail feathers. She's much more slender than my other birds too.
Trust me, I would not have been so brave if I hadn't discovered that the snake was non-venomous yesterday! I was hoping that it wouldn't be there, but that is the reason I went home for lunch, so I was half-way expecting it. I'm sure it won't be the last one I deal with, but let's just say I...
You all are right, it came back! I went home on my lunch break to check on the girls, and there it was in the nesting box. My Dominiquer was in the box next to it laying an egg, and the snake was waiting patiently. I think the Dominiquer interrupted the snake and ran it to the next box...
Oh trust me, I will definitely be watching out, and I will look carefully before just reaching into the nesting boxes too! I can't tell you how many times I've blindly reached in there for eggs...especially at night! I'm hoping that if it makes a return, my DH will be home....I'm a complete...
I had a nasty surprise waiting for me yesterday afternoon. We had gone out of town for the night. My neighbor opened and closed the coop for us to keep the raccoons out, but they didn't check for eggs. I opened up the nesting boxes, and instead I found:
All that was left were two eggs (1...
I have an Exchequer Leghorn from Meyer's Hatchery. I think it's a mutant. It's normal sized (just a little smaller than my other hens), but lays MINIATURE eggs. She's a very consistent layer, but they are not getting any bigger. It's been 9 months since she started laying, so I think they...
My girls are loud, but during the day. The rooster I used to have crowed at the crack of dawn. I gave my neighbors enough free eggs that they'll put up with the girls. A rooster...not so much.
