I ended up with 19 babies hatching this time. 3/5 turkeys, 11/13 shipped eggs and 5/15 of my own eggs. 16 were infertile/didn't develop. I'm astounded that the shipped eggs did better than my own eggs this time but I think mine may have been out in the cold a little long before they were collected.
I'm not sure why but it seems like my shipped eggs are always more in a hurry to hatch than my own eggs lol. 7 choc orps hatched so far with more pipped and a zip. A couple pips in my own eggs but nothing hatched yet. So exciting! This was a great hatch of shipped eggs. They sent me 15 eggs and...
I wouldn't worry about dewaxing unless you're concerned that it can't pip through it. When I have cracked eggs, I typically use clear nail polish to seal the crack. I've had quite a few hatch on their own and there's no removing the nail polish lol
Turkeys are done hatching. I got 3. One had a lot of fluid in the shell and drowned after pipping unfortunately and one pipped internally but never pipped through the shell so it didn't make it either. The 3 that did though are looking good and healthy! Pictures later! Now for the chicks....
I set my turkey eggs on Friday since that's my normal set day every week (yes, I'm a hatchiholic lol) but my chicken eggs got set on Saturday since I was really busy and ended up set back from my normal. I can hear turkey poults in the bowling now!
Personally, I never use any of the plugs because it limits the amount of oxygen. If the humidity drops too low, I just add another contrainer of water to bring it up :)
60-65% works well for me. Occasionally it can drop as low as 55% without any issues but I don't like letting it get that low.
I use clear nail polish and have had great success. A batch of shipped eggs came with 5 cracked ones. A little clear nail polish really did great! 2 from that batch competely developed and one hatched (I named her Crackle). I have another cracked egg with strong development from the next...
Last night, I did a quick candling, just my shipped eggs that are die this weekend. Out if 15 chocolate orpington eggs sent, 13 look good! I'm beyond thrilled with that! That's like a record when it comes to shipped eggs lol. I just had 5 blue/splash orps and 2 blue birchen Marans hatch...
Seramas are enjoying their temporary accommodations while the heat pad cover gets washed. I love the little one on the bottom left with it's leg sticking straight out lol
