It depends on the breed(s).
I hatch quite a few eggs each year. I sell most, but like to grow out a couple dozen to see how they're going and what they will look like as they grow. They're kept in their different flocks to prevent brother x sister inbreeding, but can hear / see eachother in...
I must say, rooster flocks are by far the best predator alarm systems!
It's spring time here and I've had a fox frequenting my property almost daily the last few days. I know as soon it turns up as my 3 rooster flocks are all on the outer perimeter of my main coops and go off their heads. If I...
I know people who also separate them to ease pressure on their hens while they monitor features through to second year moult. Or to breed in or out certain features. Or just to have a spare or two of all their breeds.
There are plenty of reasons for sure, but I just like to watch roosters...
Some people treat their chickens as pets.
Kind of like asking someone why they'd keep male dogs alive together if they already have one or if they're not using them for breeding. Dogs are just as loud, way way way more needy, have maimed or killed way more people, and are a delicacy in some...
Woohoo! Rooster Flock Thread update :)
Are they from your own eggs? As in, do you have a rooster with the rest of the flock already? If so, it's always good to keep a rooster flock anyway with some "spare" roosters in case your main one carks it.
Otherwise, good luck and have fun!
I still...
Sounds like you you'll be able to keep those 3 together, to keep the 6 older ones in with the hens as they've been getting along no worries, and then put the 2 wyandottes in with the fox-feeding jackass neighbour so he can get a good flogging for encouraging predators to become relaxed around...
The thing about rooster flocks is that the majority of people don't keep them. Roosters in rooster flocks act significantly different to those in standard flocks.
Having submissive and dominant Roosters with no hens is expected behaviour. Vixen was still eating, socialising, scratching and...
6 weeks since the fox attack. He hasn't been back. There was a dead fox on the road about 1500m from the property, I'm hoping it was him.
Anyway, now that Dasher is dead, the other three get along so well. It's like there's finally an equilibrium in the rooster flock. I don't get flogged...
They'd been with me for 3 years since hatchlings. They were 4 of 6, with only 2 girls. The girls both died. One about 18 months ago--she laid monster-sized eggs which was evidently non-sustainable, and one I had to euthanise 2 months ago due to an ongoing issue with ascites.
The 4 boys have...
And then there were 3.
It finally happened. My rooster Dasher was taken today by a fox. We hadn't had a fox attack in about 2 years. Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen were all going crazy, so I went to investigate. Feathers everywhere and the three had retreated into their stable. Followed the trail...
Thankfully haven't had to go through the dreaded reshuffle of the pecking order in my rooster flock yet. The 4 boys in my rooster flock are all edging on 3 years old now and long-ago settled down from their juvenile agressiveness.
@RoostersAreAwesome sorry to hear about your Roosters. You were actually the person who inspired me to take on a rooster flock in the old rooster flock thread. Such a shame that you won't be taking any more on, but fair enough at the same time.
Hopefully it's not Marek's and your last rooster...
Or, as they're all good and you're not sure which one to giveaway, and as she has kids, maybe let her and her kids choose the rooster they like? He'll be a bit more special to them if they get to choose him.
For a quick-fix, you could always stack some old pallets on some concrete blocks or bricks to elevate the igloo. A lockable gate/door on the igloo would be fairly simple to rig up with some re-purposed pallet timber too.
As it's a temp solution, this'd keep you out of trouble until you can run...
My bantam rooster is the only roo for 23 standard hens (though my 2 silkies and a yokohama hen are all pretty small). I'm sure he'd be much less stressed if he had fewer ladies to "protect" and had someone to share rooster duties with! It is hilarious watching him chase different sub-flocks all...
My roo flock is still going well. The same 4 boys, same pecking order, same intermittent bickering and fighting.
The two red-X boys (Dasher and Dancer) seem to fight more than the two black-X boys (Prancer and Vixen), but Prancer has a go too once in a while. Vixen is more interested in...
Oh no! That sucks :( and is one of the risks I thought wasn't worth it at the moment.
I'm already regretting giving all four up though. I really liked the Marans and should have just kept him with the ladies; the ladies are just kept too close to the neighbours and he would have needed a crow...
