Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

Quick update: Mouse is doing well and into her second week of meds. Piglet's final tests were fairly inconclusive for leucocytozoonosis. Mouse has not had a good egg for about a week now (which makes it easy to know which egg we can't eat!). I'll update when I have more info. Thanks again for...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

She's our most skittish duck. We've tried giving it to her as a treat, but her buddies want it too. When we isolate her, she gets completely freaked out and won't eat. We did get the go-ahead to give it all together, so this evening it will be back to a syringe. Sigh...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

We can mix all three, but boy is it a challenge. Not going terribly well...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

We still don't have confirmation on if we can mix them, so it's pretty challenging. Alas.

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

Thanks so much for your help, @Miss Lydia ! The black flies are gone now--just a spring thing, and they are usually not too bad here on the coast. That's one reason this whole thing is so strange.

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

So do we. We just wish the necropsy on Piglet had yielded a more obvious answer. Thanks so much for rooting for our little Mouse! :)

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

She had an off day Saturday, according to our ducksitter, but she bounced back Sunday and was looking herself upon our return Monday. Starting her meds today. Thanks for asking! :-)

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

You've likely noted the very high copper reading. We've switched them onto city water until we can test out well again.

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

We'll hopefully go over the results with our vet later today. The state vet said the following: "it is suggestive of a fungal or bacterial septicemia. We saw no indication of leukocytozoan forms in the tissues, although these would be better detected via a blood smear."

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

The histology reports for Piglet came back Sunday. Here they are: Lung: multifocal to coalescing interstitial pale eosinophilic, broad short hyaline-lie forms (like short hyphae) with heterophilic inflammation; moderate postmortem change Liver: Severe extensive freezing artifact and PM...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

We are still trying to decide if we are going to treat everyone, test everyone and just treat those with the parasite or just treat Mouse. Hopefully our vet will provide some guidance on this when we get the pyrimethamine.

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

Good News: Piglet's avian influenza swab came back negative. We'll have the rest of his tests back tomorrow or Friday. Hopefully we can confirm leucocytozoonosis was the underlying issue that caused his death. We're still waiting for the pharmacy to get us the pyrimethamine. Mouse continues to...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

They can be, but not usually on the coast where we are. Go fifteen minutes inland, and they can be unbearable! Having said this, we did have a worse than normal black fly season this year even at the coast. Still, Piglet had very nice feathers. It's all just so strange. It will be good to get...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

Leucocytozoon is an avian blood parasite transmitted by black flies. It usually affects younger birds (I think that has to do with feather coverage). Our understanding is that the state vet and our vet have not seen a lot (any?) of it locally, but we did have a worse than normal black fly season...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

Good News!: Mouse had a good night. She slept in her usual spot, got up to eat and drink and then was ready to come out this morning and forage with the flock. She ate her breakfast enthusiastically and seemed much more herself. Phew. We were really worried last night. Everyone else seems great...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

Unfortunately Mouse took a turn for the worse this evening after having several good days. It's scary how fast this appears to affect birds--she was great this morning. She's resting comfortably now, but after consulting with our vet again today, we're going to start compounded anti-parasitic...

Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

Our local vet (who is awesome!) called us yesterday, and she said she would like us to bring Mouse back in for some bloodwork. While Mouse is acting herself again for the most part (and laying beautiful eggs!), there is growing concern that Leucocytozoonosis may be the underlying issue and the...
