Just an update—we had to put our girl down. The infection wouldn’t leave and she stopped eating. The vet even kept her for the weekend to nurse her back without success. She was tested positive for mycoplasma (awesome...) and eecoli. So now I’m working on disinfecting everything and keeping the...
I’m having to bring her back in because the fluid is building up since they stitched it. Looks like it’s infected or close to it.
They are going to leave it open so fluid can drain—how does that work though? I’m afraid she will scratch it since she’s been doing that. I don’t understand how you...
I think because I waited too long it made it worse. I didn’t know what the issue was and I thought it would just go away so I would say if someone waits over 3 months to deal with this then they should go to the vet. It’s like it created a hardened shell around it. I wouldn’t have been able to...
Alright guys so they took her back and she started bleeding more—they put her under and removed the plug. It had hardened so much that it was difficult even for them to remove and they said the plac I cut was over a vein/artery (can’t remember) hence the large amount of bleeding. Lucky me! Soooo...
She is huddled up. Just noticed little flies on her face. I’ll place her in a box for time being. I just know anytime I’ve done that she panics and tries to get out the whole time. She’s a fighter.
It's 63 outside today--I have her in the coop alone is it too cold for a chicken with a wound? I just read your emergency link and you mentioned a sick chicken should be in the cold. (For us in the south today is a chilly day ha). I'm sure it'll be in the 70s soon though.
Let me know if this works: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0cas7ofylglzq4c/IMG_0557.mov?dl=0
The video stopped early in because it was just bleeding we were dealing with.
I applied more blukote, washed her feathers, and it seems to have stopped. I think she keeps rubbing it on her back though and scratching it.
I’m so torn on what to do. It’s a mess. Do we attempt again later or bring her to the vet? I have one part of me that says it’s just a chicken let nature...
Gosh y’all—that was a disaster. We cut three times to try to see the pus and we couldn’t see past the bleeding. After an hour of trying to stop the bleeding/cutting more to try to get to the pus we called it. I cleaned her up, and out blukote on her and her her recover in the coop alone. She...
Pretty crazy how that just heals on it’s own! Another question—last time I isolated her she completely went nuts and stressed herself out more. Kept sticking her head through the holes irritating her eye more so I just scratched the isolation. I would assume with a giant gash on her face I have...
Have you ever done this? On the threads I see theybjust cut them and leave the cut open. Wouldn’t that leave room for more infection or the other hens attacking her? How do you protect the wound?
