Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

It is so hot and humid here today and likely for the rest of the week as well. I went out to the coop to add more waterers and to take down the chicks tent as well since they seem to be roosting up with the bigs for the last week. The bigs refuse to let the tweens come out of the coop and into...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I can share my experience. Brownie is the head girl here. Whenever she got off the nest the other hens would pick on her and try and start stuff. Brownie fought back and just went back to sitting. I mention this only to say I was surprised they did it to her given her Queen status within my...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Yeah, I am really liking the idea tbh. The pole barn approx 24ft x 48ft and is currently not being used for anything. It is all dirt floor though. I am thinking of making 2 8x8 coops that have separate runs side by side. The coops would have a floor raised up about a foot off the ground. Each...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

The coop we have was made by rehabbing a very old shed that was falling apart. I took the best half of it and made a wall in the middle of it. It has a dirt floor and many gaps in the old wood siding. I have tried to sure up gaps and the whole thing has a hardware cloth predator skirt made of...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

The three I have left are allowed to roost and are considerably larger than the Orps were. Much faster growing breed. I think they will be okay honestly. The Orps wouldn’t go to roost yet especially Ryka with her lack sight in one eye. I have put in a call for a quote on getting a new coop and...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

So sad, I lost Ryka last evening. She is just gone no sign of her anywhere. I need to revamp my coop and run before adding or hatching anymore chicks though. Clearly they are not safe out there. :( The grow-ups have no problems but sadly the chicks definitely do.

Well, he is gonna be a very well dressed (feathered) man. Bond as in James Bond comes to mind. Pete would be great as well, it’s a classic!

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

You are looking for saddled air sacks and/or wobbly ones. If the air sack moves around when you tip the egg. That said honestly in your situation I would not worry about that much since there aren’t any steps you can take without an incubator. I would however be looking for cracks in the eggs...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Shipped eggs are challenging for sure. I got 24 eggs in total from a well respected breeder and shipper when I got my Orpington’s. Of those 24 only 5 hatched. From what I have read this is fairly typical. The eggs just take a beating in the mail. :( but to get the breeds you want its worth it!

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I have done this, but I incubated them myself until about a week before hatch day. Shipped eggs really do take a beating in shipping no matter how hard the shipper tries to protect them. A 30-40% hatch rate is considered excellent for shipped eggs. I am glad you got a few more than you wanted...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Quite possibly, we live very rural and the coop is backed up to a steep embankment that is heavily treed. It could have been a weasel or a very wiley raccoon. Whatever it was seemed to have broken the chicks neck. I am leaning toward a raccoon. I have quarter inch hardware cloth all along the...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I cut the apron strings and released the chicks from their tent “prison”. I did keep them all in the coop and run though, I am not at all sure I could find or catch them if they didn’t go in at night. The good news: All of them were tolerated by the flock, harassing occurred of course but it...

I am sorry. 😞 Story walked very oddly after his hip/back injury and it reminds me very much of the gait Phyllis is displaying. I think there is reason to hope it is as the vet says and that in time she will recover. :hugs

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Ryka is holding her own. She remains smaller than she should be and she is reluctant to venture far, my guess is her vision is absent or severely impaired on the larger eye side. Other than that though she seems just fine. That is a tough one. I see a little pink if I zoom in but definitely not...
