Sorry for my English, yes I meant that (as I read) the disease is not transmitted from mother to eggs, so if I buy eggs from a place affected by the disease and my hens hatch them, chicks will be fine. This according to info that I read online this morning, I clearly know less than anyone here...
I didn't know that some breeds are more susceptible than others, I'm reading some old threads about it now, that's interesting. As I said, I don't know anyone who deals with the disease in their coop where I live, so I haven't read much about it before and none of my birds is vaccinated, but I...
Sorry I just read this, I have no experience with Marek's disease and even if I know that some people vaccinate their birds I never heard of any household breeding affected by it where I live. Of course this doesn't mean it didn't happen: Marek is widespread in battery farming in Italy, so there...
Sure rats are bigger than mice and there are a lot of cats who don't even try to catch them, but even my cats that are more similar to plants than to predators (sorry cats, but that's true!) manage to avoid to be injured by rats. Cat smell works as a deterrent even if my cats are the worst...
Congratulations to Ini mini for reaching such considerable age and best wishes to Gin and Tonic!
@chickengr I think you're right: actually my 2 Araucanas survived the attack, I guess since they're smaller and thinner it's easier for them to take flight. My problem is I love chobby and placid...
Hi you all, long time no see!
I recently lost most of my chickens (included the couple in my avatar, which were my favourite) killed by a fox. It was heartbreaking: I don't eat meat, so chickens are pets to me and those Marans were 5 years old: they had arrived in 2020 a few days before the...
First of all, @abpatchy congratulations for your prize and for your beautiful birds!
@fluffycrow so far I didn't get any shipped eggs either.
One of my hens is sitting on a bunch of eggs since sunday but I didn't have the time to search for the eggs I wanted... I just gave her some of her...
@fluffycrow Oh, I'm happy for you! I couldn't hatch any eggs so far, the broody hen I had in April changed her mind when temperatures dropped, we had a very cold spring this year and no other hens went broody since then. I really hope your hen will try again soon!
Anyway, due to my severe chicks...
I would go with Mao Tsiou-Tung then, but that would be definitely a more controversial reference! :hmm
Ah and I listened to that Eurovision song, it really refers to Edgar Allan Poe, that's funny!
It's not that big, but it's oddly shaped and that makes it harder to fence it. I totally want to...
Eh eh thank you, her complete name is Edgar Allan Pio (pio is the chicks noise in Italian, not sure how it is in English, maybe "peep"? It could work also as Edgar Allan Peep), I thought she was a he when she was born! I don't know the Eurovision song, but I'm going to search it now!
Thank you! So a lot of chicks for you, good luck with all these babies, I hope to see some pictures when these Brahma eggs hatch! :jumpy
Yesterday I saw a fox from the kitchen window, my yard isn't predator proof, so I wasn't happy. I closed the chickens in the run and went out with the dog to...
Finally I have a broody! I hadn't the time to collect eggs from the breeds I wanted, so I let her sit on the eggs she chose, since I would like some more Olive Eggers. This hen is called Edgar and she was the very first chick to be born here from a Blue Copper Marans and my rooster who is an OE...
If only I could be reasonable, I would say 10 is the perfect number to get to know their personalities. Sadly I'm not reasonable at all and I have a lot of space! :D
At the moment I have 8 adults and 4 chicks, but in my coop I can host up to 20 in complete comfort, so let's see what happens in...
happy for your eggs, @abpatchy!
I finally found isbar eggs for 2 euro each and I can drive to pick them up, so they don't have to be shipped... that's good! still, I have to wait for hens to go broody and here it started snowing again, so it's going to take some time!
@fluffycrow I'm still...
I'm afraid in Italy 3 euro/egg is a normal price for rare breeds. I'm searching for Isbar eggs (definitely hard to find here) and I can't find any in the dutch website (I only see some Isbar cockerels or roosters ads, but maybe this is because I don't speak dutch!). I found Isbar eggs from...
I agree, I read enough stories about incubators to know that there are many things that can go wrong when you lack experience and I wouldn't try with rare eggs for the first time. Well, I'll let you know what I find, I guess a breeder just need some time to collect the number of eggs that you...
@fluffycrow I'm working for you! 😊 I asked a breeder I know to find me some Aseel breeders who could send eggs by mail and he told me he will let me know! He's into chicken competitions, so he knows a lot of breeders. Hope something will come out of it!
Shamo are more common here, they're still expensive, but at least they exist! Tomorrow I check if I can find someone who sells egg to ship. From Italy it wouldn't be a long trip, but mail service REALLY sucks here, I'm not sure if it would be better than from the UK, ahah!
About my hen: I don't...
You could also try the German club linked by abpatchy, I didn't know Aseel were so hard to find. The breeds I was searching for are rare and expensive in Italy, but nothing compared to Aseel!
