I lost sleep too, the first couple of time that I incubated egg's. Now, I don't worry about it as much. I do the best that I can, and I don't mind finding chick's in there the next morning peeping at me. Sometime's they are even dry by then. I let them hatch on their own, and seem to end up with...
I decided to go ahead and try candling a bit ago, since I was wondering how the shipped silkie egg's were coming along. Out of those 18 silkie hatching egg's that arrived, I have spider vein's in 13 of them. I am throwing out the other 5, because they were clear's.
I didn't want to handle them too much right now. They need to rest for now. I will check them again tomorrow as I put them into my incubator. I had ordered a dozen, but she sent me 16. I already sent her an email back to let her know how they arrived.
My silkie egg's arrived today, and all 16 will be going into my incubator tomorrow. None were broken nor showed sign's of being cracked when I candled them. They are resting now in an egg carton.
I live rural too! Had a cat year's ago, but he got old and died. Have a big dog now, and he's starting to get old too. I'm in the Arizona valley desert, so it doesn't get as cold here.
I don't have a cat or kid's to fool with my incubator or brooder. I keep those in a spare bedroom. I am sure that these silkies being so small is going to be different for me. I already have my naked neck/breese mixed flock that are laying good with large egg's, and my rooster is doing his job well.
My naked necks one's are big one's. This is the first time that I will be trying to hatch a batch of the little one's, so this will be different for me for sure. I heard that these silkies will need a higher humidity during lock-down.
My silkie egg's will be coming on Friday too, so I'll be setting them on Saturday with you. I set them without turning for 3 day's. I think that should be good enough.
Edit: Good thing that I didn't already set another batch of my flocks naked neck egg's, because I want the silkies to be the...
