Duckinea, the female I drove 500 miles to get, has layed her first eggs! :wee I've been slacking off on the egg-hunting so I found no less than 3 with her on top of them. I'm gonna collect and incubate, since she's a big part of my magpie breeding program. I JUST put in a bunch of chicken eggs...
How're you all doing? :frow
Bigtime winter here now. Trying to keep the duck house moisture-free and the ducks clean is a full time job. It's above freezing now, all the ice and snow is melting, and everything in the house is wet... I'm worried about the caravan floor rotting, 'cause there's no...
Catching a break from the cold to above-freezing temps. Outside-time for the ducks, with a little bath tub. It's been two weeks, and they're already sooo dirty! I regret my decision to have mostly white ducks...
Free-range season is over for the ducks here. The pond is frozen and ground covered in snow. 2nd day of real cold, so they haven't acclimated yet and are a little chilled.
They're separated in 2 groups, the "oldies"
And the young'uns
Speaking of flamingo's, here's the duckies gorging themselves in the vegetable garden together with my pink, plastic ones. (it's a bit of a joke since the ducks live in a caravan and all trailer park homes need pink flamingo's in their yard)
Ah! I read it as Flamingo Dinosaur and wasn't entirely sure what to make of it. :gig
That's a neat little nest she's made for herself. Too bad someone discovered it.
"Hi you big hairy, four legged duck, you wanna be our friend?"
I swear, duck don't know what fear is. Everything is curious and interesting to them.
(Logan the husky is not duck friendly though, he's only 8 months old but his stalking game is stellar.)
I have gravel in their run, good drainage. Not great at hiding the poo though, it just sits on top so I add more gravel every now and then. Also have straw in the corners where it doesn't get wet. When I change the straw in the house, I toss the least soiled into their run.
Yeah, they're very pretty! I've seen a juvenile up close, sitting on the porch. I generally like birds of prey, majestic and beautiful!
Not so much when they're flying off one of my dead birds, though... :hmm But you can't blame them, they're just following their instinct.
Some early morning shots of my young birdies
And then there's this guy. Saw the first one a few days ago, roosting in a tree. Gonna restrict the ducks' access outside to a few hours a day. Not gonna risk losing anyone this year.
Worked at the petting zoo for the first time since may (I only work winter, down season) and visited my duckies Mio, Pippi and Tengil that I hatched and raised. They remembered me!
Tengil
Pippi
Mio
There's also a gazillion wild duckies. Well, wild's maybe not the right word. They're...
Oh no! So sorry about your duckie @Claires Poultry :hit Very hard when animals get some weird thing and you know they're suffering, and there's really nothing you can do about it.
It's been raining non-stop for two weeks here, and the ground is saturated. The duck pond that dried up due to drought, is filled to the brim.
The younglings
Like the respectable muscovies they are, they of course find all other places EXCEPT the pond to do their cleaning...
Bob here's so...
Hubby's a hobby mechanic so he'll have it fixed by the end of next week, but parts don't come cheap and the ducks were an unnecessary expense that had to go. It's not like ducks are a solid investment, they just eat money and lay around all day. In a sweet, delightful way of course. Haha!
I had organized to pick up the last muscovies for my magpie-breeding project next week, but my car broke down so now I'm stranded and broke!! I had to send a humble and apologizing message to the seller and call off the deal. Luckily he was fine with it. Gosh, I hate inconveniencing people... :(...
