Hi all, today is day 21 for my bantam eggs....yesterday no sign of ANYTHING going on with those eggs...no pipping or chirping or anything. UGH I haven't checked then this morning yet... I'm hoping for a nice surprise

Seeing the picture of the beautiful baby ducks and there sweet mamma made me think of a question: If and when my bantam ducks hatch...will my broody cochin accept them or will I need to take them away from her. I really want her to keep them if possible since she has worked so hard to hatch them.

yeah, it's best to get them out from under her if they aren't developing...that gives more room for the ones that are.

Well, my hatch is due Saturday march 14...I need some serious moral support! Last weekend when I candled, the only ones looking good were the Australian spotted bantam duckies....the cochins and Buff Orps didn't look like veining was happening like the ducks did. I am going to candle tonight...

Quote: No, no. THIS is fun!!! If you want to see stress, go read the threads where people are trying to use incubators!! I have followed some of those threads and those folks are freaking out, worried about the humidity, the turning thing that stopped working, the temperature that changed...

Ok so here's a question for you guys with more candling experience...Last night when I candled and found that the bantam duck eggs were showing definite veining...and then the buff orps didn't really show much of anything that I could tell...wouldn't you think that maybe the buff orps aren't...

The gloves I bought for that purpose seemed to upset her when I wore them the first time. She really is a good hen and will trust me when I'm working around the coop...get off the eggs for a few minutes to eat and drink real quick, and she lets me clean the nest while she's doing it. Tonight I...

Hi, I just wanted to update on my broody's egg development. Tonight I candled (day 7) . I didn't get to do all of the eggs because she was getting pretty agitated and the warning pecks turned into 'bite and twist'...ouch. Austrailian spotted bantam ducks=nice veining seen on all three! Buff...

Quote: It doesn't get as cold here as it does where you are, but I have had broodies successfully incubate eggs during our infrequent freezes. They just clamp down even flatter than usual (the kids laugh and say "look at the chicken pancake!") and only take the briefest of breaks off the...

Leah-yes I know I'm crazy : Hey those were some great candling pics! I think I am going to go for it tonight and do the candling deed myself. My bo is still sitting intently on her eggs but we have been through some really cold weather and this is her first time so I'm trying to remain...

Each egg has been marked so I will know who is what, lol. Is it 21 days for incubation?

I have a broody hen that I put fertile eggs under today. THis is my first time doing this, but the gal I got her from said she was a good mama. Now my question is...even though I have only three other hens in the coop(plus I added additional nest boxes since broody mama is hogging the nest) do I...
