Broodies on eggs? Broodies with babies? Post here.

The gloves I bought for that purpose seemed to upset her when I wore them the first time. She really is a good hen and will trust me when I'm working around the coop...get off the eggs for a few minutes to eat and drink real quick, and she lets me clean the nest while she's doing it. Tonight I guess with the weather we are having, she wasn't in the mood to have my cold hand up under her bum, lol!

What we did was pull the broody off the nest. My dd (who all the chickens love) held her while we did the candling. Then we put the eggs back in the nest and let her down. She got back on the nest calmly, rearranged and sat down. No biting.
Best of luck on your hatch!!

When I moved my broody, she wanted to get back on her nest up in the coop. I found her later OFF the nest and sitting by the gate just pining for her old nest. I put her on the nest and put a rubbermaid tub lid over the nest so that she had to stay in there. I left her like that overnight. By the next day she was staying on the nest.
They just function on instinct and can't reason through the move. Once they have picked a spot they stay there. So, yes, I would make her sit on them if you really want her to hatch some eggs for you. Once she has spent some time where you want her, she will decide to stay.

We have been super busy and I have my laptop being fixed, so I haven't had any time to be on BYC!

I have some great video and pics of some of my hens' babies!! Before I got my Marans eggs, I had my broody on some of our own mutt eggs. Once I got the Marans eggs, I gave the mutt eggs to a friend who has been incubating them in a homemade incubator. I gave her 13 eggs and she has 10 babies!! Not bad for a first time incubation in a homemade bator!! I will get them uploaded as soon as I can get my laptop back.

Our Marans are due this Friday!!!!! I can hardly stand it!

I hope we get a good hatch!! There are still 12 little possibilities under our Penny girl!

Good luck with all your hatches!!

Allright everyone, I'm out now. My broody decided she's had enough of this and left the eggs some time last night. When I went out this morning she was standing in the opposite end of her enclosure screaming and all the eggs were cold. The good news is that these eggs were NOT valuable or expensive. I brought the eggs in for autopsy but after cracking several there was a smell like no other smell I have ever smelled and I figured I had learned enough. I put a band on the broody so I can tell her apart from the others because I want to see if she will ever go broody again but if she does she will not be trusted with valuable eggs because of this failure. I love her for trying in this miserable weather though.
I hope you all have better success.

Up date on my chicken! Ok well i made her a broody box and she got out of it last night. So i just let her be. And this morning i went out to the coop and she did not go box and she did not lay any eggs. So i let her be. Then just a min or toago i went out to the coop agen and she was in the nesting bx she was in yesterday! LOL YEAH!! So i hope she is broody agen and not just laying! I plan on just leting her stay in there for a few days. She got so mad when i put my hand under her to see if she had a egg. She was so mad that i could ot even see if there was a egg under her or not! So we will see!!! Every one

I can't believe that my hen, Lavender, is keeping the eggs warm enough!
I've picked her up a couple times, to take her outside to the bathroom and her belly isn't hot. It's warm.

I keep reading these incubator threads about keeping the temp. at 90-100 degrees.
Can she possible be heating them up enough?!?

Leah-yes I know I'm crazy - Sorry about your eggs.

It must have been so disappointing.

Ok so here's a question for you guys with more candling experience...Last night when I candled and found that the bantam duck eggs were showing definite veining...and then the buff orps didn't really show much of anything that I could tell...wouldn't you think that maybe the buff orps aren't going to develop? I think I read that ducks take longer so I would think the buff orps should have had veining like the ducks. UGH!! I think I'm going to pull my hair out...this is stressful.
