2 days in a row with both my RIR's laying eggs in the nest boxes. I know it's them because I was home and seen them in the nest boxes.
I do think I have a BO or a BR laying, as it's a totally different shade and has speckles, but don't know exactly what was laid yesterday.
Not worried about that. These poults were raised in the same coop as the hen I would be getting until they were 7 weeks old.
Even if it was from a separate flock, what would I have to loose?
If they continue on the path of eating eggs, they become bbq chicken. Think it's a gamble worth...
Well, at least those two will be eaten by me, lol.
I do believe I've got one BO that's laying as well as the RIR's
Keeping my fingers crossed, and will continue to give them a half can of tuna each morning for the next week. Then I'll ween em off that and try mealworms.
Why don't you think it's a good idea?
My gals don't seem to have a true dominant. Very little if any bickering.
If i do add one, it will be as a last resort. Better then changing there names to Honey glazed, or sweet n sour.
Ugghhhh..... Heard the egg song this morning. Ran out to see the remanence of a egg being consumed on the coop floor.
Why they didn't eat the one yesterday afternoon in the coop, but quickly ate this one is a mystery.
I'm thinking about getting one of my buddies older hens and see if her...
As long as I get eggs, and they don't eat them. Seems the egg that was layed in the run and the fake egg I put in the run, were both quickly pecked at, like any treats I toss in there. But the egg that was laid in the coop, and the fake eggs in the nest boxes are ignored. Maybe the protein...
I'm almost thinking that any treats or scratch I give them is in the run. Not that I give them alot. Half a cuke OR 1/4 cup of scratch a day for 8 hens. Might give them a small handful of grass also.
But maybe there thinking if it's in the run, it's fair game, as that's where I toss stuff...
Oh they have been on the walking board looking into the boxes. There's a board from the roost down to the nest walking board. They walk that to get close to the coop floor before hopping down. A peck or two at the straw is as far as they have ventured.
Yes, I have 3 nest boxes that have been opened and with fake eggs for a week or so. They are about 12" off the floor and easily accessible with ramp and walking board across the front of them. They haven't given them a second look or bothered the fake eggs in them.
So, yesterday afternoon and this morning I gave the gals a small can of tuna.
No egg as of noon. Sun came out so I hooked up to the mowers/trailer to the truck, and went to work.
Just got home, and decided to check on the gals....
Holy s$!t..... in the corner of the coop is a egg... a...
So I put some tuna on a plate. Placed it in the middle of the run, and you would have thought I put a fox in there, lol.
Took them about 15 minutes to get the courage to peck at it. One would grab a piece and fling it. Once it hit the ground, it was fair game and they would chase each other...
Ok, thanks. They eat well. Always free feed, and they never empty out the feeder.
The reason I say they attacked the fake egg I placed in the coop is because anything new they shy away from and really look it over before cautiously pecking at it.
Something familiar like cucumbers, there's no...
So I heard another egg song but it was pouring outside. By the time I grabbed a raincoat and got out there she had stopped and I couldn't find any egg or pieces of one. They were all outside in the rain.
