Chicken eggs will be easier to candle unless they are very dark, such as Black Copper Marans. Give them at least 7 days before candling though because they develop a little slower than quail eggs. The embryo will be larger = easier to see. -

Try Trader Joe's if you are wanting to experiment with store bought eggs. Why not get some from somebody with quail though? Does nobody within an hour drive have quail? Where are you located? -

Day 5 is a bit early. I candler quail eggs on day 7. You should see agroup of veins coming from a central point. It looks sort of like a spider. -

How long have they been in the incubator? What is the temp and humidity? Still air or circulating?
