Thank you, I love him dearly. He is so sweet to all my hens and comes real close to me when I sit outside with them. He stares at me with those big eyes and makes me smile. When he is on his perch for the night, I can pet him.

Thanks for straightening me out on the "direction" of risk and for the explanation - more complete than what I have seen in books.
Blackhead is not caused by cecal worm, it is caused by a microscopic protozoan called Histomonas Meleagridis. The cecal worm is an intermediate host. The...
I'vegotchickenfever :
This thread has lead us to get our own hawk deterents - now, what do we do with them? We got 3 chicks today and figure to raise them like little chickens. Right or wrong? They are straight run, so we don't know what they are, but in the event that one is a hen, do y'all...
I'd love to have a peacock. A dear friend of mine has a peacock that is absolutely gorgeous. He's an incredibly majestic bird with a tail that takes your breath away.
At first I had goats and hawks were not an issue, when I found another home for the goats the hawks came. My friend offered me Victor to give that a try ('cause no more goats for me) and it has worked great. I lost 2 hens in the short span pre-Victor and none since.
Blackhead is a disease that chickens can carry and not be bothered and it can be fatal to turkey. It is caused by the cecal worm. I regularly deworm my girls and keep a very close eye on Victor's stool which will be the first indicator of blackhead. His stools will take on a sulphur color...
A friend on mine has turkeys, guineas, peacocks, ducks and chickens. I believe the guineas could get away from a turkey if it was not in an enclosed pen. I have turkey, ducks and chickens all together and everyone does fine.
Hey CTChickenmom-I don't know what others would do, I suppose it would depend on how they were raised. Victors 1st year was with my friend and he was not exposed to dogs too much. Since he has been with me, he is seperated from my dogs by the chainlink fence and I don't think he would allow...
I'm so glad some of you out there are going to try this method of hawk deterrence. It truly has worked for me. Victor was given to me by a dear friend, so he was already very friendly. I have read that alot of people that have raised a poult as a pet have been very pleased with the outcome...
I luckily found someone who gave me Victor. We now have also become the best of friends. I thought Victor needed a girlfriend so I have on order 15 turkey poults from Lazy 54 Farm. This was the only place I could find that sexed the breed of turkey I wanted. I had to order 15 due to shipping...
In my opinion, it is not as loud as a rooster and he only gobbles a couple of times here and there. He is in the coop from sundown to morning and makes no noise until he's out. And again, only gobbles when something is different.
My friend lets hers free range. I think once they get to know their home, they tend to stay around. I have a 4' chainlink fence, his wings are NOT clipped and he doesn't go anywhere. As far as noise, he doesn't make very much noise since he is familiar with everything but when he does...
