I thought we've been over this? I only do man-math, which is to say I am not going to calculate anything! (sarcasm!) Warning ++ Slightly graphic ++ Feel free to skip this! It's pretty clear my sick hen is starving for some reason. I've got her inside, feeding her eggs, yogurt, a bit of...

Got a sick chicken in the house. Seems once a year I've got a "house chicken" for a while. Was able to pawn the last one off on MelEdwards, not sure it will work this time. One of my red stars has been extremely lethargic after a day I noticed some bleeding from her comb. Not sure if she...

I know they will store items for up to 7 days, and charge storage after that. I would imagine if they are storing them--they would be frozen as well. Can't see them keeping non-frozen cuts around for that long. I'm not sure, but they seem to do everything else. I would guess they could but I...

You're exactly right. That's why I plan to take my orders now, see what the demand is--if any--and make a reservation for the amount of Turkeys I have pre-sold so to speak. I don't plan to raise any more than 12 for next year but we'll see how it goes. I need to run the calculation on what I...

Each place is a bit different. Probably has to do with their operation, and what it's set up for. West Gardiner Beef's pricing is below: Poultry Chickens/Pheasant - $3.50 Split or Quartered - $.50 Turkeys - $9.00 Split or Quartered - $1.00 Over 30# - $10.00 Over 40# - $12.00 So I guess...

Long time no post! How is everyone? In news around here, we had one of the golden laced wyandottes killed & eaten in the yard while I was out hunting. I was suspecting a hawk/eagle but there are some pretty cocky ravens that have been hanging around lately and they are absolutely massive...

I keep my chickens in the barn--where I don't really care too much if there are mice. I still keep my feed in metal cans though. No sense inviting them in if you can avoid it!

My buff cochin was the same. I heard something odd once or twice, then nothing for at least 3 weeks. One day I heard a long deep crow and turned around to see him looking as surprised as I was. Funny beasts

I certainly see your point, and at risk of playing Devil's advocate--I'd just say that the other side of the coin exists. If we play the "10-20 years ago" game, and someone shot the guys dog, I think we'd be finding dead chickens in our own coop the next morning as well. There's a certain...

I have three Roosters. I gave away a large barred rock roo, since he was getting too aggressive to the wife. He was bound for the freezer, but instead I found him a home where someone wanted to breed pure barred rock. Works out fine. I have a black silkie roo (I got him from Widget), and a...

Ash, excellent! Will PM to work out details Widget, PM for details--one of these guys is all yours. They basically just follow each other around the yard and horse around in the water. Entertaining, but I want eggs!

Hey everyone, been a while! I'm on a mission: I have three beautiful khaki campbell drakes. I want to rehome two of them, and get a few ladies for the one I keep. They don't need to be khaki's but something that's roughly the same size is necessary. Anyone want a khaki, or have ladies to...

I'm not qualified to give legal or professional financial advice, but the way it works with most laws is all about the articulation. How you word what you're doing dictates what the State of Maine labels your operation (most of the time). If you are simply selling excess produce and eggs...

I also know Sunflower Farm Creamery (Cumberland) has a mixed flock with a white leghorn who seems to always be off doing it's own thing: sitting in the loft of the barn judging the goats, running around the yard squawking, or generally free ranging about the farm. It doesn't seem to pick on...

You could use a mechanical outlet timer like you would for Christmas lights, if you think a photocell (light activated) system would cause you trouble. Mechanical timers are in the $15 ballpark (or cheaper) and you can set them exactly when to do their job...just an idea.

Maybe not an instant kill--but hopefully enough damage dealt (hollowpoints?) to send it to a ditch someplace for it's final hours. Skunks are always the critter I don't want to shoot unless I know I have a clean headshot. Such a mess. Porcupine (aka quilpig) is my second-least favorite.

Posted an ad to Craigslist looking to re-home one of our silkies. He was supposed to be blue, and a pullet. He's a cockerel, and black, so he's up for grabs if anyone wants him. He's actually not bad looking, but I want to keep the buff silkie roo so we're going to rehome this guy. If...

I'm suspect that mine are doing the same thing. Hopefully a non-violent-offender will eat them and leave the birds alone, so I don't end up finding a rotten pile of gross.
