County chick, how's the duck doing? I have a Dominique hen who was gimpy for about 6 weeks. She appears to have started to heal, then re-injured herself again. I think it's from jumping down from the perch onto the frozen tundra below!

She's about the same. Had some tub time again today. If I take her foot and put it in front of her she stands on it, but then she lays down after a while and sticks her leg out straight behind her again. She ate a little bit of food yesterday, which was good as all she was eating was peas.

I had a silkie that got frozen feet from not covering them. She made a full recovery after lots of indoor TLC- the cells burst when it freezes. Foot/leg swells and heats up. Damaged skin sloughed off over time with beautiful new skin underneath. Lots of tenderness so couldn't use anything other than soft cloth and oozing may make even that stick to it. Her feet got soaked several times a day in saltwater and liberal amounts triple antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Sounds like your duck may have pulled a muscle or something when trying to dislodge itself. Poultry physical therapy sounds like a great idea! Keep an eye on the skin though just in case since I think you said it froze in the water(?). Spring oh Spring where are you?

How did you all weather this storm? Hey folks, I'm planning to ship some eggs. Wondering if any one here would be interested in doing a shipped egg swap? It would be a nice way to share some of our gene pools, and practice shipping/incubation skills. PM if interested. I'm particularly interested in EE or Ameraucana, Wyandotte, and my first love of Dominiques. I have EE over EE, Dom, SLW, RCBL, Pioneer, RIR, and home bred BSL. All of my next generation should be either blue or green egg layers, and either walnut or pea combed. Some will be sex linked as well.

Got a sick chicken in the house. Seems once a year I've got a "house chicken" for a while. Was able to pawn the last one off on MelEdwards, not sure it will work this time.

One of my red stars has been extremely lethargic after a day I noticed some bleeding from her comb. Not sure if she had some frostbite that was pecked, or if something else went on. I put some blu-kote on the affected areas and kept an eye on her but since then she's seemed to decline. Got her in a pet carrier now with some fresh water, greek yogurt, and some scrambled egg on hand. Maybe she'll perk back up.

Anyone got any remedies handy for getting one to bounce back? Tough to say what else could be wrong, with this bitter cold and her loss of (some) blood who knows really.

Cheers,
Jazor

Put a tablespoon of white sugar in a quart of water for her to drink. High protein and fat (eggs, sun flower seeds, meal worms, high protein chick feed).

You can also get

At your local farm supply store (Knights on rt 3 in Disgusta has it) and add that to the water, too, just in case.

We did better than we anticipated with this storm. 10 inches or less. Hard to tell because of the wind. My chickens are all still alive. I had to stay at the hospital over Saturday nite so I worried about them because I hadn't seen them since Friday night until Monday morning. Of course someone was supposed to be checking on them and giving them water but let's just say I think that person's dedication is a little spotty at best. But they look OK. Today was a beautiful day but more to come I fear.

Read the mixing on the Durvet label carefully, Jazor. That little package makes huge quantities and can harm them if mixed improperly.

LG, I don't need any hatching eggs, but I am much more likely to drive long distances to avoid shipping. I will have fertile Ameraucana eggs some day, but they haven't started laying this spring. I think they are too cold!
