SCG, you will forever be Ratilocks in my mind now. ;-)

suzMEchicks - I had two golden comets and LOVED them. They were so interactive, funny, friendly and excellent egg layers... an egg a day no question. Unfortunately, their inquisitive and bold natures made them not so good at predator avoidance. :-( I miss them.

When I lived in Bangor, we'd often look out our apartment window into the alley, and watch a neighborhood cat having a stand off with a rat. The cat and rat were often the same size. I can't stand the look of a rat's tail. Gives me the creeps. I can handle snakes, and lots of other critters, but I'd have a hard time, and have to work up to it to handle a pet rat.

MUAHAHAHAAAA!! Rats = negative 1. Me = Happy!! He couldn't resist crunchy peanut butter with a chocolate chip on top!!! He was probably about 6" long.

Congrats but you do have to tell us what kind of a trap worked.

Yes, I was wondering about the trap too. I gave up battling my rats until it gets warm, and I can line the run with hardware cloth. The rats have plenty to eat on the ground, because I buy pelleted food for my Crossbeak hen, and all the other chickens fling it out of the dish. They have to come inside for water though, because one of my dog dishes quit. On really cold nights, I shut the pop door. So far, they haven't tried to chew through it!

What about switching your flock to FF? I swear that's my greatest ally regarding rodent control. I bet your cross beak would be very successful with the texture of fermented feed. It does require a bit more upkeep: I deliver it 2 - 3 x/day so it doesn't freeze. But with your sun room, that wouldn't be much of a problem.

2...2 RATS AH AH AAAH

Caught with this trap. It has a tiny bait compartment that screws into the bottom. It can be set with your hands or your foot. It doesn't look like much but so far so good!! I'll be serving Peanut butter & chocolate chips for their last meal!

LG, I do serve FF. Mine girls still bill it out or scratch it out onto the ground. That's it...I need a wire grate over my gutter feeder!! Thanks for making me realize it!!

Thanks for posting the trap. I'm going to try one out.

I won't do fermented feed in the winter. Too much work, - I'm hardly ever home in the daylight.

I have one of those mouse sized traps. I've set it with choc chip and PB. The beauty of it is, once they're baited, the critter never lives long enough to eat the bait, so I'm still using the same chocolate chip I've been using since early fall.

I put my FF in a dog bowl. They never spill a drop of it. Are you fermenting layer pellets or grains??
