Hey everyone- I'm in the market for some new pullets/layers. I'm currently down to 2 older welsummer hens and a buckeye hen and rooster. I am looking for Chanteclers or Marans and would consider easter egger/olive eggers as well. I am near Augusta. Thanks!

Hey Everyone, I'm trying to track down some Chanteclers- I'm hoping one of my gals will go broody soon, so hatching eggs would be great!

@CoopChick719 Look at him! Thanks for tagging me, it's fun to see some "babies" all grown up! I don't think I've been on BYC in a year or so....so busy, but in a good way!

Neem oil is a good option for organic insect control, not sure how it would work on cucumber beetles though. If I have any insect issues, I use Spinosad, which is also organic approved. Best to use at night though, so minimal beneficial insects are harmed. It totally got rid of my potato beetle...

chickenneighbor can also be my neighbor! The neighbor to the right is great, they love the chickens. The neighbor to the left, not so much. I understand that it is his property, and his right not to have my animals visiting, but he was just plain mean about it....so no eggs for him!

Hey Everyone, It's been a looooong while! I had a very busy semester- Student teaching and working was a little more time consuming than I thought it might be, but now I have graduated, found a job and can spend some time catching up on everything else! All of the chickens are doing well...

Free Rooster! marans/welsummer cross- he's almost 5 months old, just started crowing. I thought we could keep two, but there have been a few too many squabbles in the coop over the past few days! Text me at two-four-two 89two one before 2:30 if you are interested- I'll be at school all day, and...

OMG your cold frame is WAAAY prettier than mine was! Scraps of wood, old window, random hardware.... BUT...I suppose it still worked. Maybe if I had painted mine the **** ( lots of mean words) plow man would not have wrecked it. Mine was shorter too...I just had lettuce in it.

Growing lettuce on the window sill has not worked well for me either! Cold frames are very easy to build, and pretty cheap too- you don't need much lumber, and there are always windows somewhere for free- either on the side or the road, or maybe on craigslist. I had a great little one that got...

We had mites late summer/early fall this year- DE may be helpful in deterring, but it did not clear them up. I eventually ended up using frontline ( just a drop on each chicken) and I bought an oil based kitchen bug cleaner/killer- it said it was food safe- used that on the roosts and such. This...

I don't think it is your imagination! Mine seem to be eating a good amount more lately. Maybe it's partially because they are locked in the coop and don't have anything better to do....!

Lots of posts to catch up on! It warmed up to 6 degrees above today- but that is not counting windchill. I started my student teaching yesterday, but we had a half day because of snow, and now school today. I celebrated this bonus day by making cake :) My rooster has some frostbite- a little...

We were out of power from Monday evening until early this morning ( about 3am!) Thank goodness for the woodstove- and snow and ice to melt for toilet flushing! The chickens all weathered the storm fine, and they have started to pick up in egg production- I've gone from getting 1-2 eggs a day up...

Bucka- I got the welsummers from a BYCer- wifetoabirdman - she is in Houlton I think. She said she got them from a breeder somewhere south of here I think the breeders name way helen byers?....I can't remember where exactly they came from! Their eggs are not all that dark- they are more of a...

MEmama- I could potentially have some fertile welsummer and welsummer/marans eggs at that point. Problem is- fertility seems a little low right now, and I've only got 2 birds laying currently- a maran, a chantecler and occasionally one of the wellies. My rooster is a welsummer. Also, I live...

I started at UMF, took time off, then went back to UMA- I am graduating through UMA, but completed a partnership program through UMM- thank goodness I never needed to travel to Machias for this! Lots of polycom classes... I considered something environmental or agricultural when I took my...

Hi Coopchick :) Who knows where I have been??? Haha- Well I guess I do, I just finished my last class ( EVER) and internship hours. I start student teaching in January, and then finally graduate in May! YAY! I've got about 3 girls laying right now, which is fine for the time being. My "babies"...
