So just to update (sorry it’s been a while, lots of stuff going on) I did try reintroducing them and my hen still pecked at them. I just decided for my peace of mind since I can’t have a brooder in my coop to just brood them myself in my outside shed. They are doing well, I glad that I got two...
I call another feed store and they said they are expecting some new chicks this week I just need to call in the mornings. What time at night did you stick the chicks under your broody?
Well then I guess I’ll have to break her brooding because no place is selling chicks young. The people at the feeds stores that have chicks were less then helpful as to when they got those chicks or when or if they will be getting more. What is the oldest age 2/3 days?
Can I give her a less than a week old chick? Only one of my local feed places has chicks and the lady wasn’t sure when they got them last week nor if or when they would get more in
She has her own cubby so I’m wondering if she wouldn’t just be fine. I was thinking about hanging curtains so maybe I’ll do that to make so the other hens can’t just walk along the edge of it like they do
How long would you separate them for? I worry with seperation as this hen is low in the pecking order and I feel integration back in with a chick would be difficult.
What would be a reason to keep the egg in the nest?
Also I have had challenges with my coop so my chickens all sleep in the nesting boxes/side shelf. Do you think they will be bothered by the chick and attack it super early or even at night? Should I wake up at 6:00 or earlier?
Lol that’s funny. Won’t she realize the “egg” isn’t supposed to hatch yet? Also should I take the fake egg out when I put the chick under her at night? What time at night do you stick them under them anyway?
Do hens really know that’s about when the eggs are supposed to hatch? Also she is a black australorp, should I get a dark chick to give her or does it not matter?
My broody when she started to sit had 1 real egg and 1 porcelain egg under her. I gave her another fertilized egg to also sit on. Today is day 12. The one I gave her I just saw today was cracked and the chick obviously dead. I looked to check for the other egg and it was gone. I searched high...
